The Impulse jet engine

Postby Viv » Sun Jan 09, 2011 7:00 pm

I have always had a soft spot for the impulse jet engine of Robert Chester, its a toroidal design with the combustion chamber incorporated in to an airfoil duct as an annular chamber, its a pressure jet derivative as one embodiment uses a heat exchanger coil and nozzle arrangement to induce intake air and premix fuel.

As a design it has a number of advantages due its use of entrained air to increase the mass flow of the basic jet, good for low to medium speed use were the drag of the duct wont be a problem, the problem of annular engines is always the accuracy of the gap and keeping it there under operating conditions.

The other thing that interests me is the challenge to machine most of it on a lathe ;-)

yeah its a jet engine as with no moving parts and it also have the toroidal combustion chamber in it.
it is formed in a most thick cylndricl side wal of the engine housng

And it probably will not work due to combustion pressure instability and distribution around the total length of the chamber, annular chambers are a pain to make work in a symmetrical fashion, time is your enemy, light off the chamber one side it takes time for the pressure rise to get to the other side, the annular gap is then blowing your exhaust unevenly through the middle of your engine, but I love looking at them on paper and trying to make them work ;-)
