lockwood hiller valveless pulsejet starting problem
hi evrybody,
I'm french and i made a lockwood hiller valveless pulse jet engine run on propane but he doesn't work, i don't understand why because i follow the plans, can you help me understand please?
link of the plan:

Looks like you're not nearly feeding it enough gas

Re: lockwood hiller valveless pulsejet starting problem
I already use a 13kg (30lbs) full propane tank without regulator.
You think i have to return the tank?
Put another tank on the combustion chamber?
At least i make a compressor, quantity of air could be the problem?
thank you for help

Yes I agree. More gas.
As a rough idea, mine likes to have a 2 mtr high flame coming out the exhaust, before shocking it with a leaf blower to start combustion.
Mine won't run with continual air being blown into it. Just a wave past the intake with the leaf blower to get it to fire and it's away.

Hi chook,
You tell me to put more gas, but how i can put more gas? I have to put the fuel tank upside down? put a other tank on the combustion chamber?
I'm not very good in english, but I think I understand you said to me i have to put my air source only during a little time in the intake air of my pulsejet to start it?

Your gas tank should be big enough.
I have 12 x 1mm holes round my nozzle to diffuse the gas and it sits right in the middle of the first tapered cone before the combustion chamber.
Your engine is not far off running, but it gets frustrating when they don't go.
A link to mine.

Franchouille,
What he means is you need to feed liquid propane by turning the tank upside-down.

Re: lockwood hiller valveless pulsejet starting problem
chook,
my fuel nozzle is placed almost as your's but he is placed just after the cone on the combustion chamber as you can see in the plan. My fuel nozzle is 130mm of long inside the combustion chamber; inside diameter 4mm; 42 holes of 3.5mm all around. Do you think it's good or i need to exchange?
my fuel nozzle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiDdsBsSH4Y
the inside of my pulsejet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZkE0gDdvv4
yes really frustrating...
Nice pulsejets!
I see a spark generator for ignition, there is a car ignition coil? can you send me the plan of your circuit? i got a very higt voltage coil from a cathodic tube tv, i find primary and seondary but how can i make a nonstop spark?
Thanks
Mike,
Ok I will test thanks.

Nice job on your motor Mike.
I don't know enough about injectors, to comment on your injector hole size. I'm sure someone here on the forum can help you though.
I just made mine to a plan posted on this forum.
Before I fitted the finished injector into the jet, I played around with it lit, out in the open air, to see what settings on the valve it required, to burn correctly.
I found that I couldn't get enough gas out of the gas bottle/cylinder, even with the valve fully opened. I decanted the gas out of the bottle, removed the valve tap and drilled out the restrictor with a 5mm drill. (It only had a 1.5mm hole, inside the bottle, before the outlet valve, for the gas to pass through)
After drilling it out it ran well, but still requires more gas after warming up to achieve greater power.
I tried my jet on liquid with the bottle inverted, but it was over fuelling it and flaming out after 10 to 20 seconds. It would then emit a cloud of frozen propane after flaming out.
Here is the link to the Buzz starter.
I had trouble with mine as it flattened the "7Ah gel cell battery" after a very short time.

I just use 5 party sparklers twisted together for ignition now.
All the very best,
Chook

Re: lockwood hiller valveless pulsejet starting problem
Yeah, sperklers are great for in the field, but I use a little battery operated grill starter most of the time. For closer to home, I use a clothes dryer or stovetop spark unit with AC in.
I do not recommend messing with TV coils, very dangerous!
I do not recommend altering your propane tank!
Using gas for this size motor freezes the fuel very quickly, so pressure drops to where it won't run anyway. You need to work out liquid running. It's a lot more fuel available and so won't freeze your tank. It requires finer valve control.

Re: lockwood hiller valveless pulsejet starting problem
Ok, i will test party sparklers.
Today I buy a stun gun (electric shocker, tazer) on a chinise web site for 13 usd, it is made with a ruhmkorff coil, I think it's the better for ignition.
For the TV coil I already use one for the ignition of my potato cannon (spud gun), I connected it on a circuit flash of camera with a condenser which reloads, but it's very long to have a spark and it lasts only one second.
link for stun gun on ioffer.com: https://www.ioffer.com/i/free-shipping- ... -513827382
Only chinise seller, low quality, very very long shipping time but low cost! and warning they can not arrive to destination, but you can enter on procedure of dispute with paypal to have your money back, I know it because I already buy these for spud gun ignition.
link for ruhmkorff coil on ebay.fr: http://www.ebay.fr/itm/GENERATEUR-TRES- ... 3cca0f39e5
It's a french seller, i don't know anything about quality but it's certainely made in china, about shipping time but i think short(for me in any case haha), but It's ebay, it's a good website i think. I never buy that because it's too expensive for me, i'm student I don't have a lot of money. And i think you can find them from your countries.
For specifications there is 15 sparks per second, 20 25 watts, alimentation 5 to 6 V who make 80000v.
This week I buy a air compressor, I found one occasion for 30 euros (40 usd).

It run! I adjust fuel flow, and I use my new compressor. But I have the impression that it have low thrust.

Re: lockwood hiller valveless pulsejet starting problem
Hate to say it but it still isn't running, it's "howling". The combustion is taking place in the wrong section, like the exhaust

Re: lockwood hiller valveless pulsejet starting problem
A couple of things:
Clamp it down! When it really starts running, it will go crazy with thrust and noise and flame!
The compressor may work, but a leaf blower is probably better for this.
Intake flare: your motor may not run without it.

Re: lockwood hiller valveless pulsejet starting problem
Mike,
Ok I will make an intake flare.
Metiz,
what can I do?
I have to notice that the pulsejet began to buzz as if it was going to start when the flame was in the combustion chamber and when I put the pipe of my compressor into the air intake to move closer to it to the flame but never have to start, what is that if I shortens the tube of air intake it will start?
