pj powered Wells turbine power plant concept

Post by metiz » Thu May 12, 2011 11:13 pm

We know that simply strapping on a fan to the end of a pulse-jet will not work, or very poorly. It prevents the engine from breathing properly. But how about a Wells turbine?

From wikipedia: "The Wells turbine is a low-pressure air turbine that rotates continuously in one direction in spite of the direction of the air flow. Its blades feature a symmetrical airfoil with its plane of symmetry in the plane of rotation and perpendicular to the air stream"

(...)

"It was developed for use in oscillating-water-column wave power plants, in which a rising and falling water surface moving in an air compression chamber produces an oscillating air current"

In other words, it will allow the engine to breath (better) than a normal turbine. Will this effect be enough to not stall the engine and generate a usable amount of power?

Any comments or remarks; why will this (not) work, what could be problematic? please discuss.

are you going to keep the turbine in the exhaust pipe or at a distance from exhaust pipe as shown in figure..And does it affect the area of the exhaust pipe by keeping an turbine..i think it will be difficult for pulsejet engine to breath if we place a turbine..

I'd have to find out. This is a Wells turbine, it can breath both ways making it a better match, in theory, for pulse-jets
