How do I make the layout of the cones

Post by imperial » Mon Aug 30, 2010 9:45 pm

I have the drawings for a lockwood hiller.
There a a lot of cone shapes in this drawing.
How do I make a template on paper to cut them out ?
Can someone please explain this with a few examples.
I now how to handle tools but am not so good making calculations.
So please explain as simple as possible.
Thanks

Use this tool. punch in the numbers you need e.g:

diameter 1: 50
angle 1: 0
diameter 2: 50
angle 2: 0
length: 100

This will give you the layout for a 50mm thick tube 100mm long. for cones and angled joins, change the values accordingly. "bounding rectangle" isn't essential but usefull with bigger stuff. You'll get a dynamically changing 3d picture of your tube for refference.

Don't forget to correct the diameters (nothing else) for the thickness of the sheet steel you use eg: if you want a 50mm tube (inside d) and you're using 1mm material, punch in 52 and 52mm. 54 and 54 for 2mm material etc etc

metiz thank you
I think that I need to set the both agle at 0
But the folow up question is how do I draw this on paper 1 to 1 scale
How do i calculate the diameter of the inner and the outer circel.

Thanks

All the diameters on the plans you are using are inside diameters. unless stated otherwise, this goes for every plan out there.

If you make your cone like in the example in the first post and you hit print, It will print it out in 1-1 scale, so true size

Thanks again
Do you know of a program that will give me the radious of the inner and outer circel
My printer only go to A3 max
I did found the forula to calculate on wetenschaps forum but that was without axamples and I'm not good at math
If I have the radious I can easy draw this on AO paper
Thanks

Why do you need to calculate radius? radius is diameter/2

The outer diameter is dependend on the thickness of meterial you are using. if the inner radius is 100mm and you use 1mm thick steel then your outer radius is 102mm

outer radius = inner radius + steel thickness + steel thickness

Or if your real lazy like me!
download this tool, print your cone pattern and trace it to your sheet metal.
http://www.pulserate.com/
Of course it is nice to have a single sheet plotter. Then you can run trace paper through it.
Someone will correct me, it's not called trace paper.

That program is the exact same as the one I posted in the rar. Only difference is that that is a newer version where you have to wait a second extra for every day you use it before you can actually use it. avoid that version, it's shit

OK sorry I was not clear in my last post.
The link of the program given by metiz is a verry handy tool.
If you look at a Layout of a cone it basicly is a part of a circle
I found this formula it is in dutch sorry
http://www.wisfaq.nl/show3archive.asp?id=58491&j=2009
I don't understand it without examples.
The layouts that we need to make are just to big to use metiz program
so I think I need to calculate and draw by hand

Sounds like a bargain, go for it. Small piece of advice though: if you can't use a piss easy program like this, chances are that it'll take you approx. 2 millenia to learn to do the same thing with autocad.

convenient mis spelling you've got there, buddy. and you're welcome. There are a whopping 5 fields that could not have been labeled easier that you need to fill in. I can not explain in to you more easier. I use this program with all my engines.
