first start of my newly built lockwood-hiller pulsejet

Post by keith mcconnell » Thu Jul 01, 2010 12:49 am

Finally got my engine put together today. working on the test stand but come not wait to try to started it. I have not put in a spark plug yet but used a piece of rag and put in the intake turned on the propane and with just a little bit of air from a leaf blower it started right up! When I get the test stand built I'll get some video and post it. This design is supposed to produce 55 lbs of thrust. If it works I'm going to try to scale it up. Is it possible to just times all the dimension by 1.5 to scale it up? I would like to build an engine that will produce around 100 lbs of thrust.

Thanks,

Keith McConnell

no you can't just scale up a pj by increasing all the dims x1.5. Acoustics don't work like that, unfortunately

It will run, but it won't be optimal.

Is there a Lockwood style engine out there that will produce 100 lbs of thrust? Is there a way to figure out what size combustion chamber I will need and then use the ratios to build the engine?

Thanks for your time,

The lockwoods I used on my twin-pulsejet dragster produced 160lbs of thrust each. There's video on YouTube.

Just got the video put on on youtube. At the end of the video the exhaust tube implodes. I guess next time I'll make it out of stainless instead of mild steel.

Ah, Mr Bernoulli, he's killed a lot of valveless pulsejet engines in his day and I've got plenty of flat tailpipes of my own.
