Annual JET FEST proposal

Post by Nick » Thu Apr 23, 2009 9:00 pm

Following the meet at Severnside Firing range adjacent to the M4, it is suggested that if there was sufficient support for the idea we organise an annual event starting say august 2010 at this location.
Due to its unique location there are few noise restrictions and loads of space in which to carry out running.
The management are also happy to let us camp at the location where water and toilet facilities already exist we could even organise a Hog Roast for the evening.

Can we have show of hands here to guage support for the idea?

many thanks

Nick

Hello Nick,

Owing to an unfortunate incident with HRH (the lady whose face is on our coins) while in naval service,
I am no longer permitted to enter the UK. However, this is a great idea and you have my moral support!

Cheers,
M.

I'd be interested in coming along, but I doubt I'll have anything to bring and run for a few years as I'm about to start work in London... unless of course there is a go-kart worthy track and I'll get it out of storage - I built to thing and have never found anywhere to run it!

It's a lovely site, well in the sun at least. When not running Jet motors it's a firing range.

Ah Nick, did I leave my ear protection with you?
Yes, the fresh eggs were lovely, big thanks.

Here's a photo from last Monday at the firing range.

That's a beautiful shot of a group of guys that obviously enjoy what they're doing, and each other.

That must have been a great time!

Yes it was!
The guy in the red is the chairman of the Gas Turbine Builder's Assoc., James VG Hill. Great guy. He brought out one of his turbines and ran it up for us. Man, THAT was impressive! It was my first up close model turbojet run, and it was amazing.
We ran my triple piper until the welds gave up and made a beautiful fireball failure; a video I hope I can get from James so I can post it here.
We also ran Nick's little thermojet steam generator and Graham's fantastic dual intake motor.

I found it interesting to compare the running of two motors of similar thrust but differing approaches to thrust production.
Mikes motor (27 N/L) and My motor (22-23N/L) have about the same effective CC dia and produce about 5Lbs thrust.
You know these motors so I will not repeat the fine points here. What interested me was, as I say, in the perceived approach to Thrust production - High velocity V High mass and much lower velocities.
The perceptual differences were very real though I don't think that either of us had the motors running at full power.
Mikes motor seemed to produce (and here I'm concentrating upon only my impression of the running motors) most of it's power from the induction pipe; so much so that I was impressed how little of the air movement was coming from the exhaust. Great big punches of air movement seemed to be coming from the induction pipe! (To be producing this sort of power from a small straight pipe motor the Cold air velocities have to be very high.)
Similarly, my motor is producing high induction gas velocities, in contrast, the exhaust mass is much higher but with a corresponding lower gas velocity. The point being that I fancy I could feel these differences in the running motors!

As an aside, my motor mounting had a much better coupling to the ground - such a little motor making the ground shake is very impressive but doesn't signify much.

A lovely day in the company of like minds and good people.
Graham.
