This one was a non-runner. She would flood with propane before she would lock in, even after the main duct was sufficiently hot. Tested several places in the intake, didn't "feel" like she had a sweet spot for the injector. Crossed checked the injection system with the other engines and they were starting normal with the setup.

May try to bend her CC back to a cylinder and see if she will run in that configuration. 36 KSI structural steel was fun hammering into an ellipse.

As promised, a picture of a hot cheeky. ha

Joe -

Thanks. Not much to enjoy so far, but really interesting. Was there anything unusual in her behavior under the influence of starting air? Any instances where you thought for a just a moment that she might take hold?

There was one time she almost took. Numerous attempts and a half bottle propane later, no joy. Haven't shot the air to her yet, I could test a crimped three point and begin leveraging the air until she starts. It will be the first build of this size, in this post, that requires an air start.

Here is a another one of my cheesy illustrations. This illustrates approx. flame volumes as the throttle is slowly increased from jam jar cycling through lock in. The first has a variable exhaust, the second a variable intake.

On the contrary, sir, that is way cool and actually should be preserved as a "classic" set of observations. The only thing "lacking" about it is that it only covers two geometries, and not very common ones. Still, very instructive.

I would have made the flames blue ;-)

Nice work, Joe!

Thanks Larry,
Here are some linears:

This one has the wide throttle range, but not much thrust.

Well, it's very cool. Nothing much different from previous mental pictures, except perhaps for positioning of the flame front itself. The difference between non-sustaining and sustaining operation is certanly evident, and quite logical, in terms of what we know about the motion of the tail slug gases.

Just curious: how do you make those drawings?

Hi metiz,

The illustrations are produced in AutoCad. The 3D work is also AutoCad. With some time they can be polished up similar to SolidWorks. Materials, lighting and shadowing and all the trim.
