Sebastian -

That is just unbelievable! Is the glass anything special, or just ordinary float glass?

wow... now that's a pretty demonstration . :D

Is there any way you could get a good macro shot of it running with your camera? (photo) I'd LOVE to have something like that for a desktop background!

But regardless, this is an amazing demonstration! However, if you were to get this self sustaining, you'll need an absolutely pristine and very controlable fuel source... it looks like that was fluctuating and dying just because of small differences of temperature in the fuel line!

wow... what a gorgeous color...

Here's a shot just after the glass started to flick splinters. The only thing I had on hand for glass was an old smith water temp guage. So,...no more gauge.

Here's a picture of what's going on inside. They're barely discernable in the stills.

just out of curiosity, are all those pictures full size, or have they been shrunken?

Very very cool though! I have so got to make a pyrex pulse jet.... and get my hands on a high speed camera. :D

Sebastian et al -

Edmund Scientific (Barrington, NJ, USA) used to sell plate glass disks with bevelled edges in thicknesses from 1/2 inch (for a 4.25 inch diam) up to well over an inch (at 12 inch diam) as mirror grinding tools. They were real plate glass, nicely polished both sides. They wouldn't hold up like quartz or Pyrex, but they would take a lot of this kind of use, I'll bet. I have no idea if they still have these available, though. Plate glass tools went out of vogue years ago. I made a very nice 6-inch diameter telescope lens by grinding and polishing one of these on both sides. It is 3/4 inch thick at center.

Mark has occasionally posted eBay entries of some really big quartz windows. Those would be perfect for this use.

I am still amazed at how clearly you can see the process in such a tiny motor "half shell"!

Yeah, I must make one! I've got a 4" round borosilicate window that's about 1/2" thick.

I do think edmund optics still sells the plate glass, if not it's their discount "scratch and dent" anchor optics that sells it...

yup: http://www.anchoroptics.com/catalog/product.cfm?id=149

6" plate glass tool, $20.00

that's fairly cheap!
