Flash Jam Jar built by university

Post by Jutte » Thu Sep 27, 2007 7:14 pm

Hi all,
I am not to sure about the rules for posting links but here goes.
While trolling throught the web I stumbled across a page referring to Georgia Institute of Technology's new combustor. Sort of a Renyst on steroids - a super jam jar if you will. Anyway here is the link...
www.rexresearch.com/zinncomb/combustor.htm
This link has got some other pulse combustors as well
If the link is taken off here is one of the more interesting patent details
on that site ( please forgive me if I broke one of the rules )

Ben T. Zinn is one of the world's foremost experts on combustion, very much including pulsating combustion. He is specifically the top man for combustion instabilities, as far as I know.

However, a cursory examination of the paper tells me that this latest combustor of his is not a pulse combustor.

Stagnation point combustor

On the other hand, I did some experiments firing a "pop-gun" device into a stagnation chamber and the results are astonishing -- maybe for some of the the same reasons.

The combustion in the pipe seems to drive gasses ahead of it, and as they bounce off the back wall of the chamber, the flame front seems to ignite them all at once -- very energetic.
