Yes, that's a pretty shot to me too.

Dear James.

The model shows this tailpipe design has 2 possible locations for the centre of combustion. The first is very close to the sparkplug and the second just behind the induction pipe. The high power comeing from combustion in the first location. Your first Video shows, during warm-up, these two locations heating-up almost together. I’d very much like to see a video of the second motor variation during warm-up. Your changes to the induction pipe location and angle -
[quote="James D"]“I changed it because I felt that the incoming air was colliding together at too sharp an angle and not moving deep enough into the combustion chamber.â€

ceramic version

Post by craigclavin » Wed Mar 14, 2007 11:53 am

Hey this is awesome, im definately going to have to build this from clay. The dimensions you posted where a little vague to me, can i get some with all the dimensions, so i know exactly what im doing?, that will be much appreciated!

i dont want to build a non working version again, then i will feel really stupid!

cheers

James tells me that this motor is the last in this list:

The induction pipes are 20.5mm dia.

Yes, it's true - I left out that all-important extra half millimetre in the drawing.

Note that this is intended to be a scale drawing of these engines, with 1 pixel on the drawing = 1mm in real life. All dimensions are INSIDE dimensions.

James D - Yes, that is a fine shot. Someone not knowing what it is might guess that it's a slug of material in the middle of some exotic industrial process or something. Beautiful!

A shocking Motor?

Post by Graham C. Williams » Sat Mar 17, 2007 10:36 pm

Dear James D.
Your motor running at about 4.9Lbs Thrust looks something like this inside. This is just before induction.
As far as I can tell the event is 2 cells wide.

Graham.

I Know I am ignorant! But what do the numbers represent?

By The Numbers

Post by larry cottrill » Sun Mar 18, 2007 4:13 am

Jim -

Look at the Pressure graph - 1.0 would be one atmosphere, i.e. the outside air condition. Look at that low pressure spike - note that it coincides with the high velocity spike on the preceding graph. THAT is where the throat of the choke cone is in the engine length! Of course, the graphs just represent a "snapshot" of the speed, pressure and temperature along the length of the pipe at that moment. Think about the pressure distribution this shows for the front "half" of the engine (to the left of the choke cone pressure spike) - think that pipe is ready to breathe?

What happens in the pipe is almost magical, once you get the cone breaks located correctly, and the cones properly sized.

I have been having a hard time getting nudis to do much of anything other than really odd stuff. Sometimes I get non-function waves that form scribbles, like go forward, down, backwards, up, and forward again, or just have 3 waves so there are 3 y values for any given x, even after clearing the data files.

Even when I can get things to run smooth I wind up getting like -2lbs thrust from a 50 lb size engine, once I got a record breaking 2.3 lbs reading on a tp-180-70.

Maybe it doesnt like my computer.

Graham, I must confess I've not even looked at nudis yet since I don't have Excel, however I'm going to try and get into it soon.

Here's a video clip, It seems to heat from the centre but I wonder if the front of the chamber is just being cooled from the incoming air.

Hi Craig, I was following your Ceramic Lady thread with great interest, If you do decide to build this I can post more dimensions, however I would suggest building an Advanced FWE mainly because its a good proven, simple design and also one of the most easy to start-up from cold.

Dear Eric.
I've sent you an email containing a QSAV file I have of a thermpulse motor. Please get back to me and we'll see if there is a problem.

Dear Jim.
The X axis is cells. 255 equally spaced cells along the length of the motor.

The Gas temp Graph Y axis is in Kelvin
The Pressure Graph Y axis is Bar.
The Gas Velocity Graph Y axis is Meters/Second

The approximate Cell Length for this motor is 2.7mm

Thanks James, Much appriciated. I agree it certainly seems to heat from the centre.
