Steve W's paired Lockies

Post by Mike Everman » Thu Jul 27, 2006 6:38 pm

Finally got a moment to pare down Nick's damn near gigabyte movie to something I could post.
We started one motor, then the other (no divider required), then adjusted the second until the color was the same (within reason), then fine adjusted one until the beat frequency (sort of) went away.
Very finicky. I don't see how you could reliably run them in or out of phase without a fairly sophisticated closed loop approach.

Here's my rig (2 M15E motors), successfully fired yesterday. A coincidental effort, BTW.

Mine required a separator for startup. Lockup was quite noticeable, with ending of the asynchronous "beat" and a slight reduction in total sound level.

Slight reduction in power (qualitatively) was noted.

Slight change in one throttle setting disrupted the sync.

Cool, Bill! I didn't know you'd made two.

What would happen if both combustion chambers were connected with a small diameter pipe, say 3/4", I wonder if you could tune the length of the pipe to make them run in or out of phase?

That's how Lockwood did it. Yes, you can tune the interaction by the length of the connector.

There's a power loss when you do this--I don't have the figure for how much.
