Another (easy starting) FWE
Hi folks,
Here's a short video of my FWE starting, without forced air, using a rossco stinger & propane gas.

re: Another (easy starting) FWE
Congratulations that’s easy starting, I remember somebody saying that the roscco stinger doesn’t work on a nonlinear engine, I think that everybody on this forum must be careful about what there saying, because not to long after that the are proven wrong.
re: Another (easy starting) FWE
Wow!
That's great! Congratulations!
Would you mind giving some measurments, James?
If not, I'd like to know, please:
1. Protrusion length of the "Rosscojector's" end to the inlet mouthouter edge.
2. Tubing ID.
3. Angle of the cut, measured from the created edge's line to the tubing's center line.
The heating(-up) pattern is interesting. Can anybody tell me whether other, classic FWEs showed the same?
Which type of sheet metal and material thikness did you use, James?

Wow! Nice engine, James. Very easy starting! Do give us details, please.
I'm sure glad it doesn't seem to be a general rule! Makes this great device even more useful.
Yes, that was me. At the pulsejet meet in California, Rossco's device was able to get absolutely everything going (you had a feeling that it would start up the inner tire tube if you tried) -- except for the 'folded-over' engines like the Chinese.leo wrote:I remember somebody saying that the roscco stinger doesn’t work on a nonlinear engine, I think that everybody on this forum must be careful about what there saying, because not to long after that the are proven wrong.

re: Another (easy starting) FWE
but you are also using a spark right?. could you perhaps try to start it without the spark, but just with the lighted stinger, to see if it makes any difference?

Yes, congratulations, James! That looks like a wonderful build of the engine, and a beautiful demonstration of it running!mk wrote:Wow!

Marten, that is the pattern that has always been observed. The entire lower front region would be getting hot, except that the gusts of intake air cause considerable cooling as the air passes forward into the front-end 'dome' before ignition. I have always claimed that the intake air flow inside the chamber is like ocean waves crashing against a rock cliff. The speed is too fast for the flame to travel back to the spout. It needs that travel distance plus the braking action against the front to slow down enough for combustion to take hold. It does not work the same way in a larger model like Eric's big one.The heating(-up) pattern is interesting. Can anybody tell me whether other, classic FWEs showed the same?
Very nice, James! We need to see some construction photos or closeup shots of the finished engine, if you have them. And details of how you did the stinger, as already suggested.

Thanks for the replies,
The FWE is built to the dimensions given by Larry in his jetzilla article, 1.25" tailpipe and 26" total length etc.
The "Rosscojector" is made from 5/16" copper brake pipe, cut through with pliers as per photo

The position of the stinger doesn't seem critical, It can be moved around anywhere from one to three inchs from the intake opening, The pitch of the jet does change but it keeps running.
I tried lighting the rosscojector before putting it in the intake but it just blows itself out, The fuel pressure is quite high, around 80+ psi.

To answer Marten other question
I built the jet from .7mm thick stainless steel sheet, It weighs around 500 grams including spark plug.

Man, that is a beautiful piece of work! Almost a shame to run it ;-)
Is your technique for forming the flares any different from the way I do it in mild steel [red heat plus gentle hammering with the ball peen]?

re: Another (easy starting) FWE
Thank you Larry and James!
The heat pattern picture was nice.
Larry, I think he just makes the bell-mouth without heating the pipe. Maybe with a press and a ball or a lrge flaring tool.

Man, what a beautiful engine. I'd make a more crude one to run and keep this one for the mantel shelf.
