Do round jets work better than square or rectangle jets?
What about intake versus exhaust?

square engines work, just not as well. In a square engine, there can be a bunch of "dead zones" where gasses aren't properly burned or are not as hot as they should be etc etc. but a square engine can work. If you have the choise go for round though

Short answer... yes. I've done it.

Doesn't work that well...

The makers of the Dyna-Jet (Aeromarine Co.,) created several p-js that were not traditional in shape, during research for a helicopter engine. It was for American Helicopter Co. (absorbed by, I think, Northrop.) All of them were less powerful than hoped and all tended to warp into a round shape as running time accumulated and they heated up. They tried various valve arrangements but none were satisfactory.
The design was finally shipped after extensive tests on a AHC-supplied whirl test stand. After AHC equipped it with several different shrouds, its performance was significantly improved, though published records (insofar as I can learn,) failed to indicate Aeromarine's contributions.

Structural problems can develop in square or rectangle engines when they are scaled up. Mostly bulging or collapsing in the center of the flat areas.
