Is this possible?

Post by brandonppr » Wed Nov 17, 2010 6:13 am

Hello please move this if I posted it in the wrong section.
This is my first post. I am new to jets all together.
I came across the pulsejet and it got my intrest.

I don't know if this would even be considered a pulse jet if it would work, but here goes.

Could the intake be pressurized by an exteral source. Then the air go thru the combustion chamber and out the exhaust.
Would this work?

I'm thinking of something like this, but instead of an oxygen tank it would be forced air into the combustion chamber from an external source:

The first picture is a rocket, the second one is a rudimentary ramjet. yes, it will work but it won't be a pulse-jet or self sustaining

Those do run and with the correct intake aerodynamic valving/resonant volume/tail ratios, they do self sustain. Basically, it is a type of valveless pulse jet; with forced air it maybe closest related to the pressure jet. Although I have seen some run without the forced air flow.

The critical weak point of the design is the difficulty in trapping the peak pressure of the combustion cycle. Pressure leaks copiously out the intake. Valved engines do a superb job of shutting the intake at the correct time to best contain the pressure so it is directed to the tail.

Most ramjet designs avoid this configuration because of resonance.

So this would be considered a ramjet right?

Could I build a small scall one of these using my air compressor for the intake and then add fuel and spark?

Any links to plans for a simple ramjet? I can't seem to find any.

go to the homepage and click on "ramjet" for a nice writeup on ramjets, some plans and maths to design one yourself
