pulse-jet ignition: links to past forum topics

Post by WebPilot » Mon Dec 14, 2009 10:33 pm

It was suggested by metiz that the answer to this FAQ be made a sticky. Feel free to post links to prior forum topics you found. Please include the author's name, thread title and date.

I just did a search on the word, "ignition". The engine responded with

Search found 571 matches: ignition

I'm just looking at pertinent thread titles. Upon a quick perusal, I found the following informative. These are from page 1 showing the oldest threads.
  1. chinese valveless/ignition system cricuits?
    Tony~ on Fri Dec 26, 2003
  2. Simple relay ignition
mk on Thu Mar 18, 2004

ppgs 2-12 still need to be done. Anyone willing to help?

If you need still more, do a Google. Amongst a wealth of titles I saw links to a couple of youTube videos. I'll leave that as an exercise for the reader to do.

Well sticky me timbers!

I use the trig10 for ignition as listed here: http://www.amazing1.com/hv-dc-power-supplies.htm (scroll down).
If you have a soldering iron I'd suggest going for the cheaper trig1k. With it you will recieve VERY clear instructions and pictures on how to assemble the unit (got the same instructions with my ready assembled unit)

Works at 3 or 30hz. Sparks at 180 and 5 millijoules, depending on frequency setting. Especially designed for igniting gas mixtures.

Make it simple and make it work.

Do you want an ignition system that runs on 120 VAC or battery???

For 120 VAC get a furnace ignition transformer off ebay about $15. Furnace ignition transformers are UL approved. The metal case is ground. You can not get shocked touching any part of the transformer when it is ON except the high voltage lead. It is not dangerious either some are 4000 volt 20 ma and some are 6000 volts 20 ma. It is no more dangerious than a car battery and a car ignition coil. Car battery is 750 to 1000 amps at 12 volts that = 12,000. watts the furnace ignition transformer is only 120 watts.

For battery idnition get a circuit board out of a throw away camera. Solder a wire on each side of the large black capacitor. Put aligator clips on the other ends of the wires so you can attach it to the spark plug. Solder a wire across the push to charge button so it stay on all the time. Remove the battery to turn it off. This is slow but it works.

A BBQ grill push button ignitor works too but is is a bit of a pain in the butt to have to keep pushing that RED button over and over and over.

A small work shop torch works fine too just put the flame near the exhaust of the engine and it will fire up fine.

You can build a marx generator with several diodes but is is slow too not as slow at the camera flash they typlically spark about once every 2 seconds but it works.

There is a dozen things that will work. Choose something that works for you. If your using this at home it is easy to use 120 vac to get the HV you need.
