Mark Pauline and Survival Research Labs
cudabean (Posted: Wed Oct 22, 2003 12:48 am Post subject: Flame Hurricane) found something about a flame hurricane back in 2003 but I missed it:

Only 5 people posted, so I guess it went pretty much unnoticed.
With no prior knowledge, while looking for something else, I stumbled across the site again:
Mark Pauline and Survival Research Labs
Producing the most dangerous shows on earth
http://www.srl.org/
They put on shows of large machines in action and one of them is a Hiller/Lockwood
http://www.srl.org/shows/events/thumb/
Going deeper into the site, I found he has rebuilt a V1
Images of new Valve Intake Assembly
http://www.srl.org/machines/v1/pix/index.html
and has a movie showing a ground test
Video clip of V-1 Test (24mb mpg)
http://srl.org.nyud.net:8090/machines/v ... 031109.mpg
and got to meet his local police department and the fire department due to neighbor complaints.
Pretty impressive.
Enjoy,

PS I wonder how good his hearing is these days?

OMG!! That V1 video is awesome! You guys gotta d/l this. The power from that thing is unbelievable, and so is the line of BS he gives the fireman dude at the end. "It isn't really that loud" hahaha
On an endless quest in search of a better way.

After the initial "blast wave" passed me by, I have recovered my senses and just realized "this is unlike any pictures of a V-1 I have seen before".
It looks more like some of the engines in pictures of pulsejet powered land speed vehicles I have posted in the past.

SRL is 'cheating' by having the V-1 blown. They have this big fan in the front, blowing air at the valves through a duct. They've been doing it for years. When they go urban, I think they don't run it at full grease but at an artificial low. At a video I have seen, the plume looks very un-jet-engine.

Evidently, the man has been building operational pulsejets since before the year 2000.
Ah, the guy is making money, having fun, and thrilling audiences not only nationwide, but worldwide.
Sounds like the "good" life to me!

Most definitely. Those guys at SRL have found a way to equate having fun with making a living.WebPilot wrote:Sounds like the "good" life to me!
I must say I've been really impressed by their pulsejet-powered hovercraft, particularly the servo-driven steering. They used to have a hoot of a nighttime video of that thing zig-tagging in the dark, all four pulsejets glowing bright. They used those medusa-like valveless things with a number of backward-bent intakes and miniature thrust augmenters.
Great, great fun.

I've seen that V1 run in person as well as the hovercraft and his 2x4 launcher. All very impressive. I posted a video of the V1 running on Mission Street in SF on the forum. I'll have to check if it's still at the right URL so you can watch it. That engine is spiritual, to say the least. It has a big gas engine (V8, if memory serves) running a large compressor to force air into the intake. A very nice piece of engineering, to say the least.
I used one of Mark's images to check my lockwood ratios for my second engine since the patent numbers seemed very much off. Mark's lined up with mine much closer than the patent.
Good stuff.

Here's the video my friend took of the engine.
http://gallery.b12labs.com/v1.mpg
At less than 10 feet away, the shockwaves were just unreal.
My damn Windows Media Player is broken, but it played last time I tested it.
Enjoy.

I just downloaded the video and it works fine in WMP 6.4.07 .resosys wrote:I've seen that V1 run in person as well as the hovercraft and his 2x4 launcher. All very impressive. To say the least, what a display! Thanks.
This show has now been put on my list of events to attend. Do you know if he(they) is(are) part of the Burning Man event?

On Mission Street in San Francisco in front of an art space. It brought the whole neighborhood out, but the cops didn't swing by for at least 20 minutes...Paul Skinner wrote:

My WMP is complaining about codecs again. I just have to download them.WebPilot wrote: I just downloaded the video and it works fine in WMP 6.4.07 .

They don't go to Burning Man as a group, but several of SRL folks go out there on their own. I met one of them by doing test runs of the pulsejet in camp.
I have yet to catch a full show, but plan to in the future. One of the SRL crew is a friend of mine, now living in LA. They had a show down there a few months ago. Wish I could have made it.

Hello- Impressive, but htese fellows would have more interest from me if they ran the Argus duct unsupported by an engine powered blower. The duct is being used as a nozzle for a blow torch rather than a pulsed cycle engine. Anyone know where they got the duct, which appears to be original?
