re: Franco Marcenaro's PULSE JET THEORY
I looked through my files very carefully but failed to find a reference. I have two different copies of the document, but neither instance has data on the source. I only remember that it was originally published in Australia.

The above link has been operational for over a year now.
I tried this link earlier today and about a ½ hour ago and it worked fine
for me. It is a .pdf file - try right mouse clicking and save it to your hard
drive.
You'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to be operational on your machine
in order to view it - just in case you don't already know.

Thanks for looking, Bruno. I know I've seen somewhere the source
at one time, but can't seem to find it again. I thought someone else
might know by now.

I received an email from a friend. He complained he was
having trouble doing this calculation using SI units. Here
is what I discovered and told him:

Nonsteady, One-Dimensional, Internal, Compressible Flows: Theory and Applications (Oxford Engineering Science Series)
by John A.C. Kentfield.
Yes. I've had this book from the library a number of times. Is a book good? All books are a good thing but does it give you what you want? In my opinion it's one of the best books on the subject but if you’re a beginner you’ll have to do so much background reading to be able to start reading it.
Webpilot, you have a copy of Kentfield. What is your opinion?
Regards
Graham.

Well, yes; I expected that much. The very title suggests a work that is not meant for the uninitiated. By "is it good" I referred to the fact that some books are merely compilations from other sources and -- while formally correct -- do not really add to knowledge except perhaps in terms of organization. Does Kentfield break new ground? Does he offer original insight into things? Milisavljevic, if I remember it right, was not overly complimentary of Kentfield and his efforts.Graham C. Concerning "Nonsteady, One-Dimensional, Internal, Compressible Flows: ..."
If you're not at this level, then don't bother with it. You'll only get discouraged.Dr. Kentfield (in his PREFACE) wrote: ... Most of the material in the first seven chapters is based on the content of
a graduate level course on nonsteady compressible flow presented by the
writer, on several occasions in the Department of Mechanical Engineering
of the University of Calgary."

Oh, from some old post discussions: You were after the original source of a
published paper by our jet flying friend, Franco Marcenaro. One of the best
pieces ever written on pulse jet operation. 1983. He was in Texas at that
time but has returned to Italy. More info if anyone is still interested. The
article originally appeared in the NASS Speed Times newsletter 1983 Vol. 2, No. 4 Page 10-20.

Re: Concerning my Speed of Sound calculation ...
If you are totally lost in what I am about to say, pick up an introductory
Physics book, and there will be at least one chapter devoted to "units
and unit analysis".
In any formula that you use, you have to observe you should first write
out the units and observe if you are missing any necessary conversion
factors. (e.g. multiply a [ft] by 12 [in/ft] if you need inches)
The SoS formula is good for all systems of units, but you just have to
be careful and use a consistent set of units. To wit, I did give
2 worked out examples.
Note in particular that in my SI example, the gas constant includes
units of kJ, which means kilo-Joules, or 1000 Joules.
So, another parameter is required under the radical, namely,
1000 N m /kJ which is multiplied in order to cancel and obtain the
correct final units. This may not seem obvious to everyone.
I hope this helps to dispell any confusion.
