Jet Powered Mini Monster Truck project

Post by snowmaker55 » Tue Mar 22, 2011 6:45 pm

Hi everyone, just found this forum and it's exciting to see like minded individuals tell their stories, ideas, data, research and experiences!

I reside in SE Wisconsin. By trade, I am a special effects coordinator for movies, tv, events for the past 25 years. As a personal project,
I am building a jet powered mini monster truck using a TJ-100 version with afterburner. I already have the truck
chassis and body together. We are using a simple 5 HP Briggs engine as a APU just to move it around without thrust power. Setting in the fuel
tanks this week ( 2 - 9-1/2 gal bullet tanks). Space is pretty tight inside the cab, but the configuration seems to be working out well, also giving
me maximum onboard fuel quantity.

The engine has been on a test stand now for 5 weeks and we are finalizing the performance. Here is a "first" test of the afterburner on YouTube-

Engine design and construction is by Advanced Turbine Design in Neenah, WI. I just finished the turbine mounting section, placing it right behind
my head in between the roll bars. This mounting config will be unique, in that I will be able to pivot the engine from a horizontal to a vertical using
a industrial 12 vdc actuator. This will allow for fire and smoke shows in a vertical format, something just a bit different. Im not designing this vehicle
for speed, but rather exhibition (I think the kids will love seeing it!!!). The chassis is not designed for 200+mph. Later this week, we
are adding electronics that will do a full start of the engine (using scuba air) from the push of just one button. It will basically cycle through about
18 points of data from the push of the button up to idle.

Should be a fun and cool project! I'll keep a journal going on this site as we progress! Nice meeting all of you!
