Icon A5 not a jet

Post by Viv » Sun Jun 15, 2008 7:22 pm

Ok so the Icon A5 is not a jet or even built yet but its a note worthy peace of real design work for a change, but maybe a very small turbo prop would work?

The company making this aircraft seem to be making some real progress with their flight test program as can be seen in this article from Gizmag

http://www.gizmag.com/icon-a5-amphibiou ... ight/9641/

The design has some notable features (below) and is powered by a Rotax petrol engine but to my mind I would be more interested in one of the new advanced diesels as they come in at the same weight and power but would run bio-diesel.

"Designed to be predictable and easy-to-fly, the ICON A5 features a high-strength, lightweight carbon fiber airframe and is powered by a reliable, 100-hp Rotax 912 ULS engine that runs on both auto and aviation gasoline at an estimated top speed of 120 mph. Besides the folding wings, more unique features specific to the ICON A5 include an intuitive, sports car-like cockpit with MP3 port, and patent-pending Seawing platform for easy access and docking on water."

With Oshkosh going on now the Icon A5 has flown in, this still looks good as it seems an attractive package for Canadian sport flyers

Re: Icon A5 not a jet update with video

Hi all

I keep an eye on this aircraft as I think its a nicely designed little sport flier and should do well in the Canadian market, Flight Global has an updated article with a first flight video, delivery's are pushed back but that's due to the economy and finance markets rather than any stated engineering problems
