Robotic Claw...

Hey all,
I saw spiderman 2 this evening, its a good film, but i am not here to discuss it's merrits. I have been intrigued by Dr. Octavius' Robotic arms, and i have been sketching for a few minutes to come up with a basic skeleton for the claw, and more to come for the rest of the structure. I was wondering what Mike Everman could make of this, about its feasibility as a scaled down project, and if you could offer any advice, or if anyone could. I am interested mainly by the movements of the arms themeslves, and i was wondering if a pull system could be made of muscle wires? Rambling i know, but i am tired.

I find servos to be probably one of the best things to use in this kind of work.

These guys sell a bunch of servo based devices:

Have a look at their polypod as it is segmented with independent modules.

I've used the pistons in some of my stuff but still use servo's when I can. I have a whole shatload of pneumtic grippers I got off of eBay a while back and made a few device but pneumatics is a pain in the ass unless you need some serious power.

Servo's are cheap, easy to control and already geared.

The mechanical aspects of all that isn't too bad, the bad stuiff is being able to control it and program it if you are just starting out.

I use this software and others like it for designing kinetic devices.

It is called freecad....and it is free. Free usually means spyware so keep an eye on it if you want to play.

could I give you a couple grand to install some servos, a CPU, and maybe an expanding pneumatic bladder or two to make it a little more, ... you know, lively? I don't need a big steel claw like Tom does, just some rubber fingers with a delicate grasp. A hydrostatic oiler like the one I am installing on my steam engine would be a nice touch too.

I used to sketch such designs, but no matter how you do it, it's not precise enough to be a seller in my industry. It is cool, though.

Yeah, yeah. I bought one of those on E-Bay last year. The heading said "Get F*cked Online Now!", so I hit the "Buy It Now" button and a $600 US charge appeared on my VISA the next day. It's been almost 18 months now and I am still waiting to recieve my 'package'. I've complained to E-Bay and they won't touch me. Neither will PayPal and VISA cancelled my card when I complained to them :-( . I heard the FU-FME software has serious security issues and there are all sorts of viruses you can catch from partners operating without McAffee or similar digital prophylactics.

I saw a robotic claw of sorts carried in the mouth of a seal. The seal was trained to "afix" it to a scuba diver's leg. It clamps on and don't come off, thus they can track the scuba terrorist and take him out.
