I think I may be able to get her to permit me to play with it.

Publishing: The Revolutionary Future
"...faces dissolution within a vast cloud in which all the world's books will eventually reside as digital files to be downloaded instantly title by title wherever on earth connectivity exists, and printed and bound on demand at point of sale one copy at a time by the Espresso Book Machine[1] as library-quality paperbacks, or transmitted to electronic reading devices including Kindles, Sony Readers, and their multiuse successors, among them most recently Apple's iPad."

Re: Kindle
I am writing this on a phone right now. The one that i also have some books on. I had only noticed with mild interest these reading pads bafore although am taking more notice now.
Reading on this phone is great but only 'better' than a book for small reasons.
1. It is small! If it was kindle size, iwouldnt bother as it looks less convinient than a book. I can hold this in one hand and flick 'pages' with my thumb.
2. Its own backlight. You will notice bad lignting or angle as soon as you pick up a book.
These readers dont have either small size or (idealy) backlight?
I have been pleasently surprised at finding an 'oldschool' use for newfangled gadgets.

Big, fast, broke, fix it, bigger, better, faster...

Re: Kindle
I'm really torn when it comes to which I prefer. There are times when I like electronic format (pdf and djvu), but there are still times when I like to 'curl up' with a good book.
Re: Kindle
"It is possible that the public will not fall on the iPad, as I did, like lions on an antelope. Perhaps they will find the apps and the iBooks too expensive. Maybe they will wait for more fully featured later models. But for me, my iPad is like a gun lobbyist's rifle: the only way you will take it from me is to prise it from my cold, dead hands. One melancholy thought occurs as my fingers glide and flow over the surface of this astonishing object: Douglas Adams is not alive to see the closest thing to his Hitchhiker's Guide that humankind has yet devised."

Re: Kindle
I read where the Internet Archive organization has decided to use .djvu format and not .pdf for their archiving purposes. Csn Kindle handle these files?
