Robert Gordon rockabilly revivalist

I love this pic of him dressed in boots,
jeans and leather on a 50's panhead
stripped down dresser. Note it's a 'rigid'.

Leslee "Bird" Anderson "Running Wild" (1988, Renegade Records, RR-104)

Danny Gatton plays on most if not all the cuts. Danny considered the title track his best recorded work ever. He lays down 11 tracks of Les Paul style guitars. He also plays bass, steel and banjo on this record.

Top Tracks:
  • Runnin' Wild
  • Pink Slip
  • Don't You Just Know It
  • Why Don'tcha Come Back
  • Stuck in a Hole

Johnny Seaton, "Uptown" (Renegade Records, RR101) Danny plays on all but two cuts for this rockabilly revivalist.

Johnny Seaton "Reaction" (1986, Rounder Records 9004) As part of Rounder's New American Series, Danny and Johnny laid down 11 great tracks proving that rockabilly was not dead, but it was also not confined to a nostalgia act. The recording and mix quality is beautiful, Danny can be heard well and plays great. Danny did the arrangements as well. Johnny and Danny should have made more records like this. Can't say enough about these records. Highly Recommended!!!!

If you are any kind of fan of Danny Gatton or kick ass Rockabilly, get these ultra rare LP's!

Thanks Simon.

I can't friggin' believe that song is 1:03:31 (h:m:s) long.

I love the cover art. Probably best enjoyed when …

They remind me a tad of Bauhaus.

Yeah, I guess they are slightly Bahaus-ish. There's overtones of Black Sabbath in there, too (somewhat more overt on some of their other records, particularly "Sleep's Holy Mountain"

The new Sunn 0))), "Monoliths & Dimensions" is pretty good, if you like drone stuff. It sounds like the title. And who can't love a band that look like this?

I have to admit to being a bit partial to some of Lvmen's heavily layered - umm - "stuff", too.

Another relatively (i.e. totally) unknown group I like are "bulbul", a sort of austrian post-punk industrial trio. Totally mental and well worth the diversion to http://www.bulbul.at If you can work out the navigation, a lot of their back catalogue is available in mp3 format for free there.

But for a complete change of mood, I'm listening to U.N.K.L.E's "Psyence Fiction" right now.

"Somewhere in space, this may all be happening right now"

Will probably follow with up with a bit of Zappa or Beefheart.

Or maybe some Miles.

Thanks for the direction to "drone stuff" whenever I get in that mood.

Even though this made #58 on the Rolling Stone's top 100, I had to force myself to listen to it today. It makes me wonder whom they poll.

I now know where Tom Waits got his "raspiness".

I'm not a big fan of this guy, either. I don't dislike him, but I was never motivated to buy any of his records.

I do enjoy this one

Both Zappa and Beefheart are a bit of an acquired taste, it's true. Once you get past Zappa's rudeness, he was an amazingly good guitarist, but it's easy to dismiss him on the basis of the well-known lyrics. "Shut up and play your guitar" is worth a listen.

As for Beefheart's "Trout Mask Replica", it's almost completely unlistenable / unbearable if you're not a fan or completely ripped to the tits. Try "The Spotlight Kid" and "Clear Spot" (reissued on one combined CD now, I think), "Doc at the Radar Station" or "Safe as Milk".

Thanks, Simon.

I found the first of these at a flea market Friday. They are worth a listen.
Essential Blues - House of Blues Vol. 1, 2, 3

Essential Blues is an attempt to trace the evolution of the music from the Mississippi Delta to Chicago and other modern, urban cities. It does a fairly good job in providing a brief history, but the main strength of the collection simply comes from the music. Featuring cuts from Lightnin' Hopkins, Howlin' Wolf, B.B. King, Slim Harpo, Junior Parker, Elmore James, Albert Collins, and many, many others, it's a quick and effective way to sample a variety of different blues styles. For neophytes, Essential Blues does offer a splendid introduction to the genre.

I fell into immediate "like" with the late Hound Dog Taylor's Give Me Back My Wig.

Check out his left hand. Yep, that's 5 fingers.
