Voice of a Tragedy

OK, just about everybody has seen this at one time or another. Lakehurst, NJ May 6, 1937. This time, just close your eyes and LISTEN to the voice of Herb Morrison describing the disaster unfolding before his eyes:

Incredibly, this is the first time a recording was used in a news broadcast! A real professional, but once his sense of the humanity of the event takes hold, his narrative turns into something you'll never forget once you've heard it.

A new restoration of how Morrison "really" sounded (lower voice):

And here, a transcription, some parts arguable:

(For some silly reason, this link doesn't work; the last parenthesis drops off -- after you click it, add a closing parenthesis in the URL window and click again.)

Some supposedly "newly discovered" footage, colorized -- some during final construction and first launch:

This ship was 804 feet long, carried over 100 people and several tons of cargo. Propulsion was four 1100HP Mercedes diesels with 14-foot 4-blade fixed-pitch wooden propellers. Cruising speed was around 60 MPH. Utterly amazing, to me. To be a member of the crew, the Zepellin Corporation required you to help BUILD it!
