Energy needed in order to run turbo compressor

Post by Hondaen » Sun Nov 09, 2008 11:22 am

Hello friends with similar interests :)

Can anyone help me out with this,

I want to find out how much energy a compressor wheel from a car turbo need in order to run at ca max safety operation speed. I have studied this before and it seems like
it is in order 15-20kW. Compressor is from a Garret GT3076 turbo for example, used for 2.5 liter four stroke engines. I can get data from the compressor itself if wanted.

The idea is to charge the air for a otto engine with constant pressure, with a "helping" motor in the rear of the car, driving the compressor. For example,I can use a standard four stroke 20hp engine in order to compress air, a valve regulate the airpressure to my otto engine in front of the car.

I would like a matematical aproatch to this problem, so I can calculate ca power needed.

The idea is a motor with a quick response. I realy hate turbo lag. FYI i know alternatives with compresors driven by the main engine itself.

Purpose of this post is to study the reality of the project, if it is possible in a good manner.

Thank you :)

Wouldn't it make much more sense to drive the compressor with an electric motor? You'd only really have to upgrade your alternator and battery to cope with the extra load. No other special systems.
