I wonder how a soundtrack of "Fire Island" would turn out replacing the pitter-patter of rainfall and thunder claps with the mystic sounds of putt-putting jam jars, hissing starts of a large snorkeler, backfirings and staccato machine gun blasts of various engines with the occasional moody drone of a V-1 overhead? ha

"Surely if anyone needed a good argument against Creationism then this panoply of the bizarre would suit admirably, since it postulates an equally bizarre, not to say warped, sense of humour on behalf of a Creator."

"Ty McDowell, who organized the march, said she was "enraged" by the turnout of men attracted to the demonstration. The purpose, she said, was for society to have the same reaction to a woman walking around topless as it does to men without shirts on."

I don't know why, but I forced myself to watch this. Last night on TV Bill Murray was mentioning, as many have, that Oscars rarely go to comedies. I wonder why it is that some people like violent themes, adrenalin rushes, and sadness?

"I wish I could unwatch seeing it now, so be advised before you click on that play button…it is horrific."

The irony starts around the 3 minute mark and just builds and builds to a grand finale.

Battle of the titans.
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/commen ... 094310.ece

"Needless to say, I did NOT say "I will arrest Pope Benedict XVI" or anything so personally grandiloquent. You have to remember that The Sunday Times is a Murdoch newspaper, and that all newspapers follow the odd custom of entrusting headlines to a sub-editor, not the author of the article itself."
"Even if the Pope doesn't end up in the dock, and even if the Vatican doesn't cancel the visit, I am optimistic that we shall raise public consciousness to the point where the British government will find it very awkward indeed to go ahead with the Pope's visit, let alone pay for it."

Another self-loathing robot. I wonder if Marvin inspired the New Yorker cartoon?
"You’ll also reacquaint yourself with Marvin, a paranoid robot suffering from depression and self-loathing, who’s taken to making up morbid poetry in order to pass the time;"
http://www0.epinions.com/review/Book_Li ... 7011042948

"Marvin is afflicted with severe depression and boredom, in part because he has a "brain the size of a planet" which he is seldom given the chance to use. Indeed, the true horror of Marvin's existence is that no task he could be given would occupy even the tiniest fraction of his vast intellect. Marvin claims he is 50,000 times more intelligent than a human[page needed], (or 30 billion times more intelligent than a live mattress) though this is, if anything, a vast underestimation."

Tidbit
"However, Adams also admitted that Marvin is part of a long line of literary depressives, such as A. A. Milne's Eeyore or Jacques in Shakespeare's As You Like It, and even owes something to Adams's own periods of depression."
