So long...And thanks for all the fish

Post by Irvine.J » Tue Jun 12, 2007 9:41 pm

Hiya gents.
This weekend, I'm embarking on a journey for 10 days, sailing from Brisbane to Cairns, navigating the treacherous isles of "Yarghghg mateys" keeping the watch and decking for a friend who's going up north. I'll try to record what I can on video, including big fish, dolphins whales and the like, hopefully I get a few good snaps along the way. I've got a google earth picture of our journey through the great barrier reef, should be some interesting stuff.

Like any good pirate I do get sea sick though, which is kind of a worry but we have enough drink literally sink the boat, so if all doesn't go to plan you'll find me floating on a few cartons of hastily tied pontoons made from beer bottles.

I wish you all well before I go, and I shall return with some tales of scurvy sea dogs, sea monsters, giant squids and tales of adventure! YARGGHGHG MATEYS! I leave Saturday or Sunday local time, Be well all.

Good luck, James! Catch us some tentacled jet fish ... get lots of photos, too. Will you do any diving?

Do any of those islands have dancing maidens that come out to greet you and throw flower garlands around your neck? If so, get some photos of them, too.

All the best, James ... have a grand time!

Ginger Altoids and Meclizine are the two best remedies (actually,
best used as preventatives) for seasickness.

Other forms of Ginger are fine (even Ginger Ale if it is the real thing).

Meclizine is sold as Binine and as Non-Drowsy Dramaine.

I have been sailing for 35 years, including racing offshore,
and get seasick... so I know that these work.

On Swiftsure a couple of years ago wee had Gale force winds,
and 6 foot+ waves that were very steep because the wind was
blowing opposite the current.

I took Meclezine, and I (being closest to the bow) didn't get sick.
I could feel that I would have (it was foamy when I burped).

A couple of others on the boat, who don't generally have a problem
got seasick. At least one of them was using the seasick patches.

Being the bowman sucks when it's rough and cold because being
the first one on the rail on long tacks means everyone else uses you
and a shield against wind, spray, and waves.

But it is the most exciting job in yacht racing.

Note the bowman being pulled back on board by his suspenders.
