"A toy plane is something you wind up and it rolls along the floor." The funniest part of the dialogue if you have seen the movie is when another fellow finds out he's never really built a life-sized plane, but the theory is the same. Simply riveting. ha

A famous racing/stunt/movie pilot and collector of warplanes, Paul Mantz was flying the Tallmantz Phoenix P-1, the machine that was "made of the wreckage", in a low level pass in front of the cameras when he caught a skid on a hillock. The movie model crashed and broke apart, killing Mantz and seriously injuring a stunt man onboard.[1]

I was looking at exploding xenon bulbs that are 12 atmospheres and came across these quirky videos. Each strange/amusing in their own way. It's a wacky world.

One fun thing to do with a xenon strobe is to strobe a ceiling fan. My brother and I did it and it wasn't even dark in the room and the illusion works great. The fan is going on the highest speed and the wind of it you can hear but the blades are rock steady motionless to your eyes and brain. It really cracks you up.

Just some dementia and good shooting.

"it wasnt supposed to go down like that.. the guy who blew out the window didnt think it was going fast enough to put out the window... but the front axle was completely busted and we had to jury rig the thing together just to drive it out of that quarry and into the scrap yard"

Just some sparks.

"Ah, yes. You're acquainted with the EMP (electro magnetic pulse)--destroys all electrical systems within the blast radius. But it's our only weapon against the machines....After my digital alarm clock & cordless phone blew up I started grounding my discharge wands to the water pipes."

"If you think that's bad, try running a Tesla coil near electronic devices. I blew out a brand new shortwave radio that way because I left it in the same room about 12 ft away. Nice machine!"

I'm working on the stungun/pulsejet siren/flame/heat defence weapon. Might be a deterrent to hear a deafening pulsejet, have a fire hot flame and give the attacker a zap to boot. (Just being satirical) (but it might work) ha
Compare my Redhead Dynajet Stun Baton idea to this. Too funny. "Just scare him away. "

I like the strobe effect on one of these flashlights featured.

I wonder if he would like the platinum catalyst self-starting jam jar using our friend methanol instead of hydrogen. ha

"The lighter is exhibited in the Deutschen Museum and in the old pharmacy in the Heidelberg Castle." What a nice castle for a lighter exhibit.

If you use methanol with these hand warmers instead of lighter fluid, they start heating up automatically, and get too hot to hold in seconds. Kind of fun when I did it. These hand warmers use platinized asbestos wicks instead of platinum sponge. The tubular wick has a spring inside it to hold the shape.
You can also spray a mist of methanol on the wick and it will light on fire.
"The newer heating element has 3 times more platinum powder." Maybe they are using a platinum plated ceramic now or something else with a high surface area instead of the asbestos one like I have?

I wonder how well a flint and alcohol device might have worked back then? They also used a glass lens back in the/those old days, but you had to have a sunny day.
Today's answer.

A good read.
"Remarkable, isn't it, how old technologies link up to contemporary science? Actually behind Döbereiner's invention was cutting-edge science of its day—it was reported in several journals in Germany, France and England within weeks. And Berzelius, in a series of influential annual reports on the progress of chemistry, writes the year after:
From any point of view the most important, and, if I may use the expression, the most brilliant discovery of last year is, without doubt, that fine platinum powder has the ability to unite oxygen and hydrogen even at low temperatures.
One hundred seventy-five years later, we are still studying the intricacies of water burning. The wonder of platinum glowing in a stream of hydrogen remains. Imagine a contemporary surface chemist coming into an antique shop in Saxony, and feeling a magical connection, yet not knowing exactly why, to that mysterious object—a Döbereiner lamp in a display case."

Just a thought. Once I got a nice shock when I unpluged a spinning ceiling fan and touched the prongs of the plug after I unplugged it. Kind of the same concept.
