An interesting make-and-brake device using a kind of Leidenfrost effect/intermittant bubble insulation to pulse the coil. Maybe some "hot and cold" fluctuation in resistance of the platinum wire comes into play as well.

The colors kind of add to the effect. Nice simple table experiment.

"One of the largest examples of an electrophorus was built in 1777 by German scientist Georg Christoph Lichtenberg.[7] It was 6 feet (2 m) in diameter, with the metal plate raised and lowered using a pulley system. It could reportedly produce 15 inch (38 cm) sparks."

I was curious about the price of those panels. I wonder how two panels hooked together would work as an 8 foot X 8 foot electrophorus? That would be ~4 times more surface area than the above video and you would need to be very careful and stand a good distance away from it so as not to get shocked/electrocuted or worse perhaps.

"Yes, it works on DC as well. Some use batteries directly connected to the motor to run it. The explanation I gave in this video is just the most popular one. I've given a link in the video description to abstracts of papers that provide some other explanations."
