I gather you could try some other variables too and come up with other insights or facets to the understanding of what the waves are doing. He went 70 paces. I went 93 paces, as far as I could go without crossing a busy street, and it still worked holding my arm straight out at shoulder height perpendicular to the direction of the car without needing any water or head "antenna".

Here's something I noticed when watching an old video of mine using a zinc galvanized snorkel, an odd yellow color and it dawned on me that it might be zinc oxide recalling this other video. And it's good to remember to avoid the exhaust fumes from snorkelers if galvanized pipe were used and just generally because of the various methanol by-products of combustion like formadehyde.

Since I use a lot of galvanized pipe I see the yellow stuff often. sometimes it turns into a powder/dust like coating that can be wiped off. Sometimes it forms little dropplets of liquid metal that eventually evaporate. If the metal has been pickled in a certain way the underlying steel has a really clean quality to it.

One time I filed and used a grinding stone in a drill to deburr and ever so slightly flare the exhaust end of a plumbing pipe pulsejet. Later after running the pulsejet I noticed a ridge had formed and I was able to dislodge a soft perfect ring of zinc with my finger that had formed/deposited around the circumference that was previously ground down.
Recalling the zinc oxide color change video, another demonstration came to mind with ordinary tablesalt, how it can change color and revert back to white.

Remove Galvanization with Acid - Hackett How-To

Pertinent viewer comments

"One third strength is as strong as hydrochloric acid comes. Hydrochloric acid is an aqueous solution of hydrogen chloride. That is, it's hydrogen chloride dissolved in water. At standard pressure and temperature water can hold about 38% hydrogen chloride. Then it spontaneously fumes white hydrogen chloride gas. You see the fumes when you open a fresh bottle. If the fumes reach your lungs or eyes they turn back into hydrochloric acid and start to burn... So, 1/3 is effectively full strength."

"FYI: Conduit is generally painted on the inside to make it easier to pull cable. Acid will not remove the galvanized coating under the paint. That paint will also burn and fume when you weld. If you want to do this, you should strip the paint first."

"An interesting effect I noticed was that the bottle occasionally created an invisible vortex ring which would slam into objects on the far side of the room. In a future video I may experiment more to create a way for those vortex rings to be made more consistently."

I tried some experiments with the propane pop gun project shown here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8KSHcGHiY0M

I bought some tubing like the stuff in the video and put some attachments on the end. One thing that was reminiscent of my attempted paper mache ostrich egg jam jar that went bang and stung my fingers was a half gallon paper orange juice container that also went bang when I sparked my propane torch via the 10 foot length of vinyl tubing, a delayed fuse effect. The top blew apart in several places. I knew it would explode, it was just something to do.
http://www.mouseprint.org/2010/05/31/tr ... ons-of-oj/

Then I tried a few aluminum beer bottles sleeved together end-to-end with the bottoms cut off. So one top of the beer bottle accepted the tubing and the other was the tip of the gun so to speak. That arrangement went off with a really nice bang too, and the front bottomless aluminum beer bottle went flying off. Then I tried some flexible stainless steel gas line tubing in a half inch diameter connecting that loosely to the twin beer bottle arrangement. The whistle type gas tubing seemed to increase the bang effect, maybe by adding turbulence or from the reduced diameter of the 5/8 inch vinyl tubing. My steel tubing looks like this but it's not this non-whistling type. ha http://www.amazon.com/Dreffco-Non-Whist ... B009S9CSF4

As things evolved, the old small Dynafog pulsejet fogger I cut the valves and complicated intake off of long ago was used for the next experiment. By capping the head of the fogger jet with a copper fitting reducer with short length of 1/2 inch copper tubing the jet now looked like a smallish typical linear valveless pulsejet. To that the head of the torch was snuggly inserted or sleeved into the intake and it was found that a mere half second of propane before clicking the ignitor switch on the torch worked wonders. It makes a really impressive gunshot sound every time you fire it like a typical pulsejet sometimes does when you are trying to start it and it backfires. Some shots are a little weaker, you can't let it have too much propane before sparking it. So that was a lot of fun for a bit. The whole thing is pretty small and I liked how simple it was to "make". Every second and a half you can fire off another shot, enough to frighten birds and it's very reliable, I don't think it ever failed to fire in the twenty or so shots I did. It might have been a bit taxing for the neighbors. It's a small combustion chamber maybe 2 inches in diameter if that. The exhaust tube around 3/4 inches in diameter I recollect.

Lastly I tried a 1.25 inch diameter Logan that I never got to run, only reving it up for a few seconds for lack of a fueling system. My little Logan of .75 inch diameter combustion chamber ran fine though on methanol, acetylene, and Mapp gas. Anyway, the larger Logan also produced gunshots when I puffed in propane in the side-port and sparked the piezo ignitor on the torch. It was very loud too, a little more than the Dynafog jet perhaps but not as elegant, being side-ported and made from plumbing pipe parts. Here's the little Logan running on MAPP for review. I may try to simplify the little Logan, so the fueling will be easier. The little Logan didn't want to go bang no matter how many times I tried. It's funny though how instantaneous the flame front can propagate into a bang on the other designs, as seemingly as sudden as you pull the piezo trigger. And so nearly effortless a project. I might do some video tomorrow. There are so many things you could try and get to work I believe.

In other news I recalled this other flame propagation within a tube video I posted some time ago. It goes a bit faster being hydrogen and oxygen. Using the language transfer here is the description. Don't blink, you might miss it around the 6 second mark. I can't figure out what they are doing if they are drawing water into the tube after the shot for a demonstration as the hydrogen and oxygen volume in the tube would condense creating a vacuum.

Hydrogen + oxygen collected by electrolysis by sealing a long tube to ignite. Amazing demonstration effect results!
