A lovely assistant, adding a certain "je ne sais quoi" to the project. I liked this one. ha

Some green colorants. My copper tubes will flash/bark a brilliant green with methanol sprayed in them and one end sealed, but I haven't run something steady so a fuel additive may be needed to maintain the brilliance. Copper tends to catalyze methanol, a thin coiled fine copper wire once heated will continue to glow dimly in a vapor of methanol, often until the wire melts. Platinum wire is best for the glowing filament trick though. Anyway if you want a green effect ...

An old favorite, methanol and boric acid powder

Here's one you don't see every day - a nice R/C model of the Concorde:

A Project Squid. I liked the fluid motion but at the same time I was frightened. Imagine somehow a pulsejet powered aircraft such as this, maybe just a pulse or two per second, refreshing some chamber and sparking it.

"To my horror, a giant alien squid descended upon Austin's 79th Kite Festival at Zilker Park."

Thought I would put this here also so I could find it. eBay musings are too nebulous and short lived. Fuels with sulfur will poison the catalyst, but hydrogen gas is another lovely thing to light with such devices. Hydrogen and oxygen will detonate in the presence of platinum. Of course a spark will too, it's just neat though how platinum works. ha
Another thing too is that you can use thicker platinum wire that this spider web thickness shown, a thicker wire just has to be preheated to start the reaction and then it will too ignite methanol or hydrogen. Of course that's how glow plugs work.

Interesting how the flame appears after the sparks.

sulfur hexafluoride
http://youtube.com/watch?v=5LZ7vystdkA

"Actually, it's 5x heavier than air, 5x stronger dielectric insulator than air, and 100x better at extinguishing arcs than air. SF6 is as close to you as the nearest high voltage substation in your neighborhood. It's used extensively in voltages of 69kV or higher. One word of caution - once the gas has been heated above 350°F, it contains toxic by-products which can be lethal."

"Go to your local power company. Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is a class 2.2, UN1080 hazardous material. It's used by power companies in high voltage application - typically circuit breakers rated at 69kV and higher. I work with the stuff for a living."

"It's currently between $10 and $20 per pound. You can get it from any specialty/welding gas supplier (or if you know someone who works for the substation maintenance department of your local electric company."
