There were better shots of the mist effect in the actual show.Mark wrote: ↑Sat Nov 27, 2010 4:18 pmI was watching a show on sea snakes last night and this particular sea snake being of terrestrial origin can't lay it's eggs in water. So it lays them in this underwater cave. The neat thing about the cave was that a fog or cloud was generated when the waves created high and then low pressure variations. It reminded me of this plastic bottle demonstration.

Around the 3:47 mark it looks like a brief clockwise circular motion is occurring instead of the typical jam jar torus, and at the neck,
the outflow flame segregating to the right.

Re: youtube
Kind of a Logan look to it. Not wild about breathing smoke though, but interesting for a home-built and for the fact that it looks like a "working" pulsejet rather than recreational.

Might be exciting to try a jam jar jet at 2.5 atmospheres.

Re: youtube
I wonder if you could start a Dyna-jet by angling the tail up say 30 degrees so that the fuel level in a clear/transparent fuel line could be carefully walked right up to the metering jet ready to go without entering or dribbling into the combustion chamber. Then with the combustion chamber filled with cotton and pure O2 fire the spark plug or perhaps try a tail end Bic lighter start where the initial whoosh and subsequent vacuum causes fuel to be drawn in the intake? If that didn't work perhaps fire the spark plug igniting the cotton/oxygen mix creating an impulse or bang start by corking the tailpipe to build up even more pressure, thus even more vacuum to draw in fuel. Cotton starting probably won't appeal or become popular though, but you could be the first on your block maybe.
On the other hand, things like sparkler starting seems so yesterday when you could be using cotton.

A few other sources of cellulose. Might be fun to try a Cattail Barking Dog with pure oxygen and cattail fluff. Re: youtube
Here's a curious fire tornado vs fire hose. Somehow in an abstract way I imagined a jam jar jet effect without the jar, the fuel cellulose instead of methanol and a chimney feedback effect without the chimney. Although the flow is more of a steady state, the center fire vortex might have resonate properties as it expands and contracts/collapses - pulsating or quivering in a vague sense.

it brings to mind this other effect of a hollow tree producing a sound described as a roaring jet engine - an old post of mine with flames and the height of the tree adding up to a 170 foot spectacle.
Towards a wood fueled pulsejet.
"Many years ago when I was a young forester working in Western Montana for
the USFS we would often use hollow trees for our lunch fires, especially on
those days when the temperature was struggling to get above 0 degrees. In most
cases the trees were just hollowed out but sometimes nearly solid pitch
branch stubs filled the center of the tree like nails on a board. Most trees just
burned hot and gave us a nice lunch fire but I can remember a particularly
tall western larch that was broken off at about 120 feet....we didn't know
until the fire was set that the entire length of the tree was hollow and the
black smoke from the pitch was so thick that the ranger station forty miles away
got calls about a plane crash....the flames shot about another 50 feet from
the top of the tree and the roar was louder than any single tree fire I can
ever remember. My crew boss almost got fired for starting the tree because
the location on the mountain on a crystal clear Montana winter day made the
smoke visible for almost 100 miles."
"It was a crystal blue winter day with a high temperature of about 6 degrees
at noon. There wasn't a whisper of wind that day and when the pitch on the
inside of the hollow tree ignited the fire roared like a jet engine shooting a
plume of thick black smoke several hundred feet into the air....that is why
the crew boss got in trouble!!"
