Hi Zippiot,

The 45 ACP service round is 850 F/S and 400 Ft.Lb. of energy.
It is subsonic at 0.8 mach.

GUNS STILL SHOOT SUBSONIC!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was told a 22 shoots around 1200 ft/sec and it went up progressively from there...

Hi Zippiot,

The smaller calibers do travel at very high speeds. A .22 Cal. can be loaded to provide over 3000 F/S. with a 53 grain bullet, providing over 1000 Ft.Lb. of energy. ( centerfire )

Some larger calibers like 30-06, and I'm sure some military .50 caliber sniper rifles are supersonic also, but like Al said about the .45, you won't find supersonic velocities in any pistol that I know of. High velocities are not so great for short range stopping power anyhow, a big slow bullet will knock down a big target easier.

Hi,

The 30-06 is the most useful cartridge.

110 grain @ 3500+ FPS for varmints, up to 220 grain @ 2500+ FPS for very large game, with excellent ballistic performance throughout.

not sure where you get your information....most calibers are supersonic, .50 bullets are hypersonic (mach 5+)

sub sonic bullets are made specifcally for weapons like an H&K MP5, because with a supressor, you can still hear the sonic boom of the bullet. a suppressor+subsonic bullet is much more quiet than just a supressed super sonic bullet.

There are some nice schlieren images on the net of bullets in flight. In some, can see the shock wave coming off the nose and little vortices left in the wake. The angle of the shock wave can be used to estimate the bullet velocity.

Somewhere on Gary Settles's web site at PSU, there is a schlieren image of a hand-gun being fired. If memory serves, there is a shock wave coming off the slug. The angle of the wave is pretty obtuse, suggesting that the slug is moving at a trans-sonic velocity.

speed of sound at sea level is roughly 340.29 meters per second.

that's around 1116 feet per second.

just for referance....

I KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been workin at least an hour a day on that computer, a virus snuck in and corrupted every file location. I am going through all the system 32 at the moment just trying to get windows to work right, but hopefully once its done all my stuff will still be there.

But the pics are crap comapred to the pages and pages of math!!! Using just that you can compeltely design an axial flow turbine of almost any size.

speed of sound at 10,000 feet drops to 660ish right?

higher you go=thinner the air=lower the speed of sound.

on mars, the speed of sound is around 586 mph

I AM THE KING!!!!!!

I just searched my email and found a draft of the math I was going to send to myself for safekeeping. Anyone seriously interested just ask and I can email it to you (it is super valuable, I will not share it with just anyone).

It is all the math formulas and examples for an axial flow [all examples are for a 2 inch diamter model] and it will walk through every freakin detail. It took me a month to decipher it and another 2 to do all the calcs. Once done I started building, it only took me 4 months b/c I was in a machine shop 4 hours a day anyways and had the help of a machinst who used to work at nasa.

PM me if interested.

Bear in mind that a chunk of disintegrating turbine or compressor has about the same kinetic energy as a .45 caliber handgun bullet (larger pieces may be significantly higher energy)
Who cares if that size of a bullet or that size of a bullet....

The bullet reference is only to make sense of the risk´s involved!

A GT is a different beast compared to a PJ... a wheel traveling at 160K RPM is no picknic in the park... And yes a redhot PJ is either...But all that can happend is that the walls ruptures... or the thing implodes...

I´ve personally have the odd turbines failed... (5 pcs.) and i go thit by schrapnel (SP?) by one... that hurt!

So play safe...

If Your turbine wheel glows orange/red/white... get a big mallet and smash the wheel... and then throw it away...
