aberrant pop bottle fun
I was visiting a buddy the other day and he said "by the way,
watch this!" He had a plastic pop bottle partially
filled with some off the store shelf liquid and one more
mystery ingredient. Can you guess what?
He set it down several feet away from us and after a few
minutes wait, the center of the bottle began to melt and
BAMMM! It self ignited.
The following is now in our near future (154KB).

Normally I would phrase it {Bamm, it exploded!} Or {Zing, it caught fire!} ... as in spontaneous combustion. It doesn't sound very useful, melting a plastic bottle. There are several things that will spontaneously combust when mixed, some will explode, what's the point?
If you are making bottle rockets, I would think a simple thin double strand wire would be best, a spark ignition.
Again, what's the point?

That video isn't his!!!!!!! When your going to copy someone else's video don't claim it is yours. That video is of a hydrogen/oxygen water rocket anyway!!! Traditionally ignited with 2 wires and a spark. WANABE...............
Here is the origional source of the video:

The two cigarette lighters, lower left, from a half century ago or more are self-igniting. You fill them with methanol and when you take the cap off the air and methanol vapor react on the platinum catalyst and in very short order the catalyst ignites the methanol impregnated wick spontaneously.
Just one example of spontaneous combustion. I've a few more.

Here is a bottle of glycerin and potassium permanganate. Glycerin you can buy at most any store like Walmart or any pharmacy near the lotions or other health care products, vitamins, etc.
I use to use an eyedropper and put a drop of glycerin on some of my powdered aluminum and KMNO4 and step back. Then about 10 seconds later it would detonate, firing a large, fast moving smoke ring straight up into the air, and it would rattle the windows. But intimately mixing Al and KMNO4 must be done carefully. Never mix more than you want to blow up in your face. Another name for KMNO4 is purple salt.

The video was originally an mpg, but I converted it into a .gif
file so everyone with a browser can view it - although in Opera,
it runs noticeably slower than in Netscape.
If you download it and try to edit it, you will see I put the
original author's name, date and copyright in it. I did this
from the "get go".

PS
I read where this site was previously posted elsewhere on this
Forum.
The purpose of my post was/is that I wanted to contact those
who did more than just go to a link.

re: aberrant pop bottle fun
What is the point of using a plastic bottle that melts for an explosion like that? It's kind of stupid.

Anyone read the information posted on Wikipedia re: KMn04Mark wrote:Oh hey again, what's the point?

Little did I know it's also used to purify cocaine and make meth(cathinone). No wonder I can't find it anymore in Canada.
In my lifetime, between the damnable addicts, anarchist nut jobs, and gov't regulations, people have managed to suck the fun out of life.
//I was interested in the fact that KMn04 was used as a propellant in the Me 163.

re: aberrant pop bottle fun
Speaking of spontaneous combustion, lets turn this topic into just that, a discussion of all possible known spontaneous reactions, Mark already mentioned one, mixing Potassium Permanganate (found at home depot or lowes in 5lb bottle for water filters) with Glycerin/Glycol, or if you want it to really be spontaneous use Ethylene Glycol (highly poisonous)....50%+ Hydrogen peroxide will also work. If you have any antifreeze at home, chances are you have a source of glycol, or ethylene glycol!!
Now I have not tried this yet, but I herd that if you mix 50% Potassium Permanganate, with 25% Aluminum and 25% Sugar, that mixture will spontaneously ignite when it touches water? Has anyone done that? Will it work?
Post any other spontaneous reactions you know!!!
