It's appears to be a very barbaric test. Imagine losing 10 children, and then having your body covered in boils. I don't think that shows much love, it's more like animal cruelty. Like soldiers in war, horror would precipitate mental illness at best. Couldn't there have been a better way?
If one were waterboarded, would one be expected to stay the course/keep his faculties? Humans are fragile creatures. It's no wonder they have secret weapons.

I saw this same stuff just as I was zipping up my tent at night when camping in the Oregon Cascades with my girlfriend. I happened to notice a light coming out of a hole in the ground which was quite startling if you aren't expecting that sort of thing. I took some of it home in a moist cloth and it lived for several days. You could see it glow in the daytime if you cupped your hands together and looked inside.

Another time I was just going to bed and put down my copy of "An Anthropologist on Mars" and turned out the light. The book is rather haunting in some aspects and just as I turned out the light I almost got goosebumps for the book was glowing green. What a sneaky mind game Olive Sacks played on his readers. I don't think there is even a mention of the effect anywhere in the book. And too, I got another copy at the library and found that it didn't glow so not all books got the magic cover.

A brief aside on the hardback and the somewhat cryptic title to this review. The power went out in my apt this morning and as I was stumbling about looking for matches I noticed a glowing line on my bookshelf. I touched it and realized that one of my volumes had a glowing dust jacket... sure enough the publisher (or maybe Dr. Sacks?) really wanted us to know that this book **IS** illuminating. It seems that the front cover has been treated with some kinda florescent material. Trivia at its best!"

One other thought out of the book Programming the Universe ...

"How did life arise? Why is the universe so complex? What is the future of the universe and of life in particular? When we look into the Milky Way, our own galaxy, we see many stars much like our own. When we look beyond, we see many galaxies apparently much like the Milky Way. There is a scripted quality to what we see, in which the same astral dramas are played out again and again by different stellar actors in different places. If the universe is in fact infinite in extent, then somewhere, eventually, every possible scenario allowed by the laws of physics will be enacted.
