Nature's Children

It's appears to be a very barbaric test. Imagine losing 10 children, and then having your body covered in boils. I don't think that shows much love, it's more like animal cruelty. Like soldiers in war, horror would precipitate mental illness at best. Couldn't there have been a better way?
If one were waterboarded, would one be expected to stay the course/keep his faculties? Humans are fragile creatures. It's no wonder they have secret weapons.

As the prisoner gags and chokes, the terror of imminent death is pervasive, with all of the physiologic and psychological responses expected, including an intense stress response, manifested by tachycardia (rapid heart beat) and gasping for breath. There is a real risk of death from actually drowning or suffering a heart attack or damage to the lungs from inhalation of water. Long term effects include panic attacks, depression and PTSD. I remind you of the patient I described earlier who would panic and gasp for breath whenever it rained even years after his abuse."[22]

"Yet the metabolic pathways underlying heavenly states of consciousness are neither more nor less "natural" than any other patterns of matter and energy instantiated elsewhere in space-time. Knowledge of these (hitherto) genetically maladaptive forms of mental life has mostly been impossible to emotional primitives like us. This is because of the pressure of natural selection. Cruelly, any genetic blueprint for naturally "angelic" minds [if evolved blindly via the mechanism of natural selection acting on random genetic variations] would entail crossing dips in the evolutionary fitness-landscape. Such jumps are forbidden for reasons of neo-Darwinian theory. So truly beautiful minds never evolved; brutish Darwinian lifeforms were selected instead."

"Analogously, the enraptured mystic who can "see a world in a grain of sand, And a heaven in a wild flower" is not deluded; such perceptions are uncommon at present merely because it has been genetically maladaptive to occupy states of sustained mystical bliss. For in the ancestral environment of adaptation, it was typically more adaptive to see grains of sand as boring and neglect them." ha

Kind of funny in part two about whether to climb to the top.

I saw this same stuff just as I was zipping up my tent at night when camping in the Oregon Cascades with my girlfriend. I happened to notice a light coming out of a hole in the ground which was quite startling if you aren't expecting that sort of thing. I took some of it home in a moist cloth and it lived for several days. You could see it glow in the daytime if you cupped your hands together and looked inside.

Another time I was just going to bed and put down my copy of "An Anthropologist on Mars" and turned out the light. The book is rather haunting in some aspects and just as I turned out the light I almost got goosebumps for the book was glowing green. What a sneaky mind game Olive Sacks played on his readers. I don't think there is even a mention of the effect anywhere in the book. And too, I got another copy at the library and found that it didn't glow so not all books got the magic cover.

This review is from: Anthropologist On Mars (Hardcover)
"I absolutely love the book and use it as a discussion point when I teach my introductory psychology students about brain and behavior relationships. The case of the color-blind painter is especially helpful at getting students to understand how consciousness and memory and perception all tie in together.
A brief aside on the hardback and the somewhat cryptic title to this review. The power went out in my apt this morning and as I was stumbling about looking for matches I noticed a glowing line on my bookshelf. I touched it and realized that one of my volumes had a glowing dust jacket... sure enough the publisher (or maybe Dr. Sacks?) really wanted us to know that this book **IS** illuminating. It seems that the front cover has been treated with some kinda florescent material. Trivia at its best!"

"Could one be an artist without having a
real "self"? The fascinating story of the autistic artist
Stephen Wiltshire makes one wonder. Apparently the
whole visible world just flows through him -
without making sense, without becoming part of him.
Yet, he can make excellent drawings!
This story and the others in the book are
indeed very interesting reading and does enlarge
ones understanding of what the human is.
To quote the book - It is possible that persons
with these traits (malfunctions) are more creative.
If science eliminated these genes, maybe the whole
world would be taken over by accountants!
And lets hope not!
It is so much more fascinating with all
its current mental richness!"

I decided this topic probably fits best here.
Out of the book Programming the Universe ...
"As it computes, the universe effortlessly spins out intricate and complex structures."To understand how the universe computes - and thus to understand better those complex structures - we must learn how it registers and processes information."
"How hard is it to "speak Atom"? To learn to converse fluently takes a lifetime. I myself am a poor atomic conversationalist, compared with other scientists and quantum-mechanical engineers you will meet in this book. To learn enough to carry on a simple conversation, however, is not hard." ha
"As a professor of quantum-mechanical engineering at MIT, my job is to massage electrons, photons, atoms and molecules into those special states in which they become quantum computers and quantum communication systems. Atoms are tiny but strong, resilient but sensitive. They are easy to talk to (just hit the table and you've talked to billions upon billions of them) but hard to listen to (I bet you can't tell me what the table had to say beyond "thump"). They don't care about you, and they go about their business doing what they have always done. But if you massage them in just the right way, you can charm them. They will compute for you."
Atoms are not alone in their ability to process information. Photons, (particles of light), phonons (particles of sound), quantum dots (artificial atoms), superconducting circuits - all these microscopic systems can register information. And if you speak their language and ask them nicely, they will process that information for you. What language do such systems speak? Like all physical systems, they respond to energy, force, and momentum, to light and sound, to electricity and gravity. In italics > {Physical systems speak a language whose grammar consists of the laws of physics.} Over the last ten years, we have learned this language well enough to talk to atoms - to convince them to perform computations and report the results.

One other thought out of the book Programming the Universe ...

"How did life arise? Why is the universe so complex? What is the future of the universe and of life in particular? When we look into the Milky Way, our own galaxy, we see many stars much like our own. When we look beyond, we see many galaxies apparently much like the Milky Way. There is a scripted quality to what we see, in which the same astral dramas are played out again and again by different stellar actors in different places. If the universe is in fact infinite in extent, then somewhere, eventually, every possible scenario allowed by the laws of physics will be enacted. The story of the universe is a kind of cosmic soap opera whose actors play out all possible permutations of the drama."

I didn't care for the political debate of the war because it's so divisive, and not my aim, but if you can muddle through to near the end on the lesson in democracy for the Arabs, I thought it was rather witty.

Some John Cleese humor and inspiring boabab trees and lemurs of course - a wondrous land. I didn't see any of my waveguide quartz crystals. Lots of beach sand though. ha

(Hello Mark),
"We have found some old paperwork which I can with 100% accuracy say
that part#1565 was produced for Nortel and the material is Heralux WG material. That is Flame fused natural quartz crystals. This natural base material was taken from mines in Madagascar in Africa."
