"Thanks to David Grubb of San Diego for pointing this out.) Lactarius indigo is delicious simply sautéed in butter, but the most fun way I have prepared them is in an omelet with or with scrambled eggs. You can guess what this does to the eggs-- it turns them green!! Green eggs are lots of fun to have, especially for kids."

"A cucumber tendril begins as a straight stem that elongates until it finds something to latch onto. Then, secured at both ends, it forms a left-handed helix and a right-handed helix, joined at the center by a “perversion” — Charles Darwin’s strikingly Victorian term for the point at which the coiling changes direction."

"We released octopus and larvae immediately after taking some photographs and video. Even on a featureless sandy plain one can find the perseverance of life. A good lesson in exploration: never hesitate to continue exploring, even when it seems you are not going to find anything."

[“What am I holding?” she asks Tatiana.
Tatiana, her eyes completely covered, hesitates.
Her mother prompts her. “Tati, look through your sister’s eyes.”
There is a pause, a breath held.
Then Tatiana, eyes covered, somehow floats into her sister’s brain: “The Lorax!” she announces.
In order to see through each other’s eyes there is some internal shift, a decision, as if each sister’s soul moves over and makes space for the other.]

"Multilayer reflectors that produce structural colour consist of ordered layers of these pairs of thin films layered in series, producing even stronger constructive interference for specific wavelengths and resulting in very pure, intense colours (Fig. 2B). The classic example of multilayered structural colour in animals is shown by the blue Morpho rhetenor butterfly, in which the multilayered structure on its wing scales produces a vivid blue colour of such intensity that it is said to have a visibility of up to half a mile."
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2850791/
"The iridescent lamellae are only present on the dorsal side of their wings, leaving the ventral side brown. The ventral side is decorated with ocelli or eyespots. In some species, such as M. godarti, the dorsal lamellae are so thin as to allow the ventral ocelli to peek through. While not all Morphos have iridescent coloration, they all have ocelli. In most species only the males are colorful, supporting the theory that the coloration is used for intrasexual communication between males. The lamellae reflect up to 70% of light falling on them, including any ultraviolet (UV). The eyes of Morpho butterflies are thought to be highly sensitive to UV light and therefore the males are able to see each other from great distances. Some South American species are reportedly visible by the human eye up to one kilometre away."
