Pulse jet noise dB?

Post by Jmitchell » Fri May 13, 2005 10:36 am

Approximately how loud is a medium sized pulse jet in dB? I didn't notice how loud they were until I got mine running.

I can feel my earmuffs shaking when it runs lol.

Offhand, I don't remember any measurements being posted.

At the California meet, we found out that the sound does not carry that far, however. At the winery half a mile away, the sound was, as the lady in the tasting room said, "like a bumblebee on cocaine".

It was a great opportunity to compare the sounds made by different engines. The loudest were not necessarily the most unpleasant. It was easier to listen to Chris's HUGE Lockwoods than to Marten's very small screamers, for instance.

The Chinese sounded particularly loud to me. The 'Pipewood' is also pretty loud for its size.

The most mellow of all was Rossco's big rusty tube he banged together on the spot. It burbled and roared in a way that was quite acceptable even without ear protection.

To my ear, the most 'serious' and convincing sounds were produced by Bill's IAME Escopeta. That one really sounded as if it belonged on an aircraft.
