re: pheonix 30.3 turbine

One positive feature of the Kamps turbine is the plans show how to make the turbine from plate material. This process involves: 1. cutting out a circle 2. Slitting the edge for each blade 3. Canting or twisting each blade to the appropriate angle of attack 4. Grinding the blades to an airfoil shape....

re: Rocket belts and such

I guess these are a very complex problem due to reliability, controllability and usability. At least I can fly one on my XBox in Grand Theft Auto, San Andreas! The difficulty in flying these things reminds me of something funny I saw at the rodeo a couple of nights ago. A bare-back bull riding conte...

re: Rocket belts and such

So the drawback of the monopropellant really is the power-to-weight ratio. But the great advantage is it's fine controllability. Here's an idea: Build a rocket belt with both monopropellant and a hybrid motor where the hybrid motor is providing 90% of the required lift as a constant thrust, then use...

Rocket belts and such

In this recent PopSci article: http://www.popsci.com/popsci/aviationspace/63eafe0e8d299010vgnvcm1000004eecbccdrcrd.html The inventor has been working since 1975 to develop his own rocket belt, building on the progress of the Bell Rocket Belt. He spent 20 years perfecting his Hydrogen Peroxide purifi...

re: $200 Hang Glider

When I was in highschool and living in Alaska, my father and I took up hang gliding. We would share a glider and would take turns. We learned on an Eipper Flexi-flyer II, then traded up to a higher-performing Eletra-flyer Cirrus 3. Later, I bought a Phoenix 8, but didn't fly it too much. Anchorage h...

re: Solotrek XFV, RIP or?

Thanks Mark. I remembered seeing an updated version of that in Kitplanes Magazine in the "Rotorcraft Buyer's Guide" issue. They call it the ILV and out of curiousity I googled and found an updated link: http://www.flying-platform.com/index.html It's weight-shift controlled. Here's something interest...

re: Solotrek XFV, RIP or?

I guess another issue is safety. No possibility of autorotation after mechanical failure. One solution would be to use a Ballistic Chute: Use these procedures (similar to helicopters): * Load rotors - verify engine OK * Levitate above obstacles. * Gain forward momentum staying low. * Once airspeed i...

Solotrek XFV, RIP or?

I was disappointed when they discontinued development of this aircraft: http://www.unrealaircraft.com/qbranch/solotrek_xfv.php Anybody here of anything new on this? Something this cool probably can't stay dead forever. What I would like to see were this design ever to be perfected is the addition of...

re: physics of bike wheel

This subject has been beaten to death here. Well almost. The thing I would add is a bicycle wheel is not completely in tension. There is some compression, but none is in the spokes. The compression I'm refering to is the rim. I would bet that a thin flat flimsy rim (like a barrel hoop) would readily...

Re: My turbine wheel

Why do they melt and cast the inconel in a vacuum? Anyone know? Does that effect the crystalization? Another thing I was wondering: When you operate a turbine wheel, it obviously gets pretty hot and somewhat close to the melting point. Doesn't this change the temper of the material? Maybe temper is ...

Re: Pulse Turbine

What about the turbine blades that they use for some wind turbines? You know, the blades that look like vertical versions of old push mower blades? The advantage would be that no matter which direction your fluid flows, you get consistent rotation in one direction. Efficiency? Couldn't tell you one ...

Accoustic Stirling

This link here: http://www.electrifyingtimes.com/eng.html and others on google under "accoustic stirling" describe an engine that was recently (this Sept?) announced at Lawrence Livermore National Labs. As near as I can tell, it's like a howler tube (howlers rely on external heat sources, right?). T...

I'm definitely going to experiment with this too.

What kind of thrust can you get out of a jam jar? If the outside diameter is three inches, is it feasible to perhaps tweak the design a little to get 20 oz. of thrust? Or am I way off base?

Um... I don't know. Why should I? Please clarify. No real reason in particular, but: 1. It contributes to an up-and-coming information resource. 2. It probably wouldn't require too much effort. 3. How many times as a youth have you gone to look up info on pulsejets only to find a lame one or two se...
