Re: Fuels: Cracking and gassifying
Grim, that is interesting indeed. I jumped the gun a little today and brazed up a jar, out of curiosity and itch to do something. I could probably draw up an approximate wood gas generator if you can estimate the rate you are using propane. I could try doing a conversion of heat values. Then size th...

Re: Fuels: Cracking and gassifying
Mike, I'm not only interested in trying to make a pulse combustor for solid fuel, but in extracting work from the pulsing, not the thrust. In the form of a linear alternator. So I will be very interested in maximizing the pulse energy and minimizing the thrust. The opposite of what most pulse jets t...

Re: Need help cutting Pyrex test tube
Thanks Mike, I tried it briefly today with a broken remnant of a test tube I tried before. I taped it and fastened the Dremel in the vice. Unfortunately the little cutoff wheel I had wouldn't even scratch the glass. Wrong kind I guess. I went to the hardware store and picked up some non-Dremel brand...

Re: Tesla Compressor
Hi fastnova are those belts good for 30,000 rpm on say a 3/4" pulley with 1 hp? Are they toothed belts or round? re. disks I didn't mean the disk ports when I mentioned holes. I meant the place where aluminum stops and stainless steel begins. If you remove the aluminum piece, it has a hole in it whe...

Re: Fuels: Cracking and gassifying
Well I'm actually interested in the pulse aspiration possibility, rather than the turbine. Even though I have actually built a disk turbine. So I'd prefer to be in a valveless pulsejet forum. By the way, a wood fired turbine has been done at least twice that I'm aware of. In one funded study a conve...

Re: Gassifier Gas?
To get back to the original question: Wood gas has a low flame speed, and contains a large proportion of nitrogen, so if it was able to work in a pulsejet, that pulsejet would need to be optimized for the low flame speed. In piston IC engines it wood gas works best in high compression types, and con...

Re: Need help cutting Pyrex test tube
Thanks Mike, I'll try it.
Would you fasten the Dremel down and rotate the tube to cut, or vice versa?
Gradually work around in several passes or cut through like a circular saw in one pass?
Tape over the area in advance?

Re: Tesla Compressor
fastnova, how will you couple the shaft of the shop vacuum motor to the Tesla compressor shaft? I'm mainly worried about vibration from shaft misalignment at that high an RPM. I might still use the router, which ought to be powerful enough to do the job, I think. I had considered welding up a stand ...

Re: Fuels: Cracking and gassifying
I've been reading the posts on biofueled pulsejets, and as a person who has done a lot of experimentation with green wood chip (50% moisture content) combustion (for heat, not propulsion) I would say that the focus doesn't necessarily have to be on fuel conversion, but on designing a solid fuel burn...

Re: Tesla Compressor
Fedde, heh, did you build yours? :D Man, I mixed and poured the foundation by hand, and built a bandsaw mill from scratch to mill the trees into boards, not to mention everything else. We're in the house now and have been for a 6 years, but my 2 year old now needs a bigger room. Also we need some ne...

Need help cutting Pyrex test tube
Can someone help with instructions on cutting Pyrex test tubes. I've tried a couple methods I've seen elsewhere on the web without luck. These were for regular glass tube, not pyrex test tubes -- maybe that was the problem.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: Tesla Compressor
Nice work. I hope you haven't given up, since it looks like it's been awhile. I also worked on a Tesla compressor 6 years ago, only I tried a scroll ring. This was as far as I got. http://www.sredmond.com/disk_turbine.htm (see pages 5.6.&7 for the compressor ring stuff) Probably not very efficient d...
