re: Steam engine

I am really trying to stay away from more complication, and I do not really care too much about efficiency on my first engine. I am almost done, just finishing up boring the cylinders. Maybe on a second engine that would be a cool feature to add.

re: Steam engine

The PDF blueprint was thrown together quickly, and did not represent any pipe runs. The 4 cylinders all have a hole at the end. Cylinders 1,3 will be connected together with a pipe, and the same for 2,4. On either side of the 4 cylinder grouping, I have built valves, each with a pressure inlet, and ...

re: filler rod for a TIG

Generally speaking any metal "can" be a filler material, this however isn't good practice. For SS use 347. Arc welding rods are usual coated with a material which sublimates into a shielding gas, since you will already have a shielding gas in a bottle with TIG, using such a rod will add slag to your...

re: Steam engine

Well, after a bit of CNC programming, I made my first piston. I CNC milled the inside, and then I manually added the oil grooves and then turned down the outside with a tolerance of 0.0005". I might consider CNC programming the lathe, but I think it will take longer to program and set up for each ru...

re: Toxic fumes boiling KNO3 in water.

You have to agitate it whiles your evaporating off the water. Its the same as doing it in a cup, just more surface area for a quicker refine. Grinding it up also works, but you are breaking apart the particles. When you refine it, each small granule was formed and is complete crystal structure (nice...

re: Toxic fumes boiling KNO3 in water.

Who the hell said anything about sugar? This topic is strictly for the refinement of kno3!

And if there was sugar, the described method above would be considered the re-crystallization propellant method, just not in an oven.

re: Toxic fumes boiling KNO3 in water.

Just a tip, after dissolving all of the kno3 in boiling water, spread it out on a metal sheet and throw it on the grill. It will take 1/10 the time to evaporate of the water, due to greater heat and surface area. Then just scrape off the powder into a container.
