re: Determining if a cavity will resonate
Hi Eric, I just fancied a go at working it out for myself. From what I've read of Helmholtz resonance, any cavity terminating in a neck has to resonate because the ocillation occurs in the neck. The shape of the cavity is unimportant. Its just a reservoir of compressible gas. PJs are different in th...

Determining if a cavity will resonate
Hi All, My two problems are: 1) Designing a valve grid for a large pulsejet 2) Designing the pulsejet 1) has largely been solved for me by the Luftwaffe. 2) however is still an issue as I'm not building PJs the size of V1 motors. Is there a bit of physics I can use to calculate if any given shape of...

re: Reed Valves for 110 lbf Globe/Solar Pulsejet
Hi Jerry, Thanks for getting back to me. Does the Solar have a set of venturi after the valve carrier like the Argus? The impression I get is that they're there on the Argus to ensure combustion happens well away from the reeds by keeping the intake speed higher than the flame speed within the ventu...

re: Creating the valve plate disc?
This might give you some ideas: http://www.wilsonlogan.com/Spulse-jet01.htm First I tried to make the disc on the lathe and it was a disaster. I had flame cut the original disc shape and I spent a long time grinding off the flame hardened steel. Even then I couldn't satisfactorily machine it & gave ...

re: Reed Valves for 110 lbf Globe/Solar Pulsejet
Hi Jerry, In response to your question "Are any of you interested in more information?" my answer is "heck, yes!" What I really want is some high res pictures of the Solars valve arrangement. Ideally complete & dismantled, photographed directly from above with a ruler in the photo so that I can see ...

re: Creating the valve plate disc?
Hi Guys,
I made a 12" diam pulsejet with slightly unconventional flap valves and they were too wide ie across the diameter to close quickly. Also, the heat buckled them very rapidly.
Once you get over 6" you need to go with a valve grid, not a disc. Its easier to build too.
Cheers,
Wilson.

The test engine in this document looks familiar as does the damage to the reeds:

I cast one valve carrier for a set. Search my posts and you'll see pics. The angle is pretty steep at 23 deg IIRC. I never got round to casting the rest of the set though. I may get back to it in late September.

Wilson.

re: Welding with acetylene
I'm no expert but I have welded with everything going except plasma (would love to try that!). Anyway, gas welding can produce some of the best welds possible. Just as good as TIG in the hands of a pro. Practise is the key. You just need to keep doing it. If you can find an old hand to watch I reall...
