Re: turbine

Hi MTC When I fitted a turbine wheel to a pulse jet http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqMn0A2aUdo I was rather disappointed by the results , the fuel burn rate was horrendous for the power produced ...............I get much better results with my gas turbine gas producers driving freepower turbines . C...

Re: turbine

Hi MTC Sounds like your 180F TOT was caused by the limited amount of steam trying to heat the turbine wheel up , steam at 150 psig can produce velocities of ~3,000 ft/sec , for you to only be running the turbine at 1250 rpm either means a lot of gearing or a lot of wasted energy from the turbine . I...

Re: VALVED pulse-jets with turbines (turbocharged pulse jet)

Hi Dan I'm more into gas turbines these days , the PJ turboprop was just a bit of a diversion , it didn't produce any real shaft power even though i was able to spin the freepower turbine to ~20,000 rpm , my thoughts are that PJ's produce the bulk of their thrust "internally " rather than "externall...

Re: Picked up a pair of Schwitzer S500:s today.

Hi Anders The two stroke IC engine should have been more than capable of turning the lube pump , we only need ~200 Watts of energy to supply high pressure lube to even a big turbo ...............5 bar would be plenty of pressure ...........there could be a mismatch between lube system components ......

Re: Picked up a pair of Schwitzer S500:s today.

Hi Anders

5 bar should have been enough , though when the oil heats up the pressure can often drop alarmingly low :(

Re: Picked up a pair of Schwitzer S500:s today.

Hi Anders That was a bit of a bummer :-( I've been looking thru my kart build notes and there is a mention in them that rather than the relatively shallow oil tank I used , it would have been advisable to have built a deeper tank so that any cornering G forces didn't cause problems with pickup cavit...

Hi Anders

What sort of oil pump are you running ???

LOL......There was a bit of play in that shaft bearing at the end of the video :-)

A few more pics of the engine innards would be appreciated , flametube and evaps as well

Re: Hi everyone, looking for some help/info

Hi Joe Theres not much written about designing turbines using a radial inflow wheel , most of the examples use axial turb wheels which are somewhat different, but the same, if you know what I mean . Kamps book is as good as any , even the expensive turbine books have examples that don't quite workou...

Re: Hi everyone, looking for some help/info

Hi Joe EGR cooler sounds good . TOT , or more correctly ITT ( inter turbine temp) of ~600C - 1100 F is OK , it can be higher than this but with less safety margin in case something isn't "right", I have run ITTs of up to 800 C -1450F but only for short periods , your longer running times at full pow...

Re: Hi everyone, looking for some help/info

Hi Joe Bit cold up your way at the moment ;-)) Generally you only need a freepower with ~2 times the gas producer flow areas , but a very small gas producer like your 36mm inducered one might need slightly more than twice because small turbos have poorer component efficiencies than larger ones so th...
