I am guessing coal will see a resurgence of popularity once the CO2 and mercury problems are addressed. I don't see people jumping on the Nuclear bandwagon anytime soon. I used to like solar and wind as an alternative, until I saw the artist's rendition of what a solar farm would look like and after...

we built a model of a Schmidt tube
Was that Schmidt's original design or the re-design by Gosslau that was used for the V-1?

Imagine if you owned a big yacht how many miles per gallon you would get. I think that would be gallons per mile. ;-) Actually, as in automobile mpg, much depends on how fast you want to go. You can also play with hull shape, and, once you get to a certain speed, you need to worry about aerodynamic...

Salt Lake mayor calls for bottled water ban Rocky is a self-possessed dweeb. Not that I disagree with his position on water bottles, but he is still a dweeb. I think that he is trying to position himself to be the Green Party candidate for President. ROCKY FOR PRESIDENT -- so he can take the campus...

This discussion reminds me of the time my oldest brother used baling wire to disable the valves on half the cylinders in my grandma's '61 Plymouth Fury (with the rectangular transparent gold flecked steering wheel and push button tranny). I think he read about it in Popular Mechanics, or Mother Eart...

The secret to decent city mileage in hybrids will be an efficient auxuliary engine to run the a/c, heater and the 1000 watt entertainment system...and the microwave. Auxiliary engines have been planned for the mammoth SUVs for a few years. If their main engine can be optimised for only pushing the r...

It still costs around 1/15th as much to charge an electric car from a wall socket than it does to fill your tank (assuming they have the same range). The pessimistic economist (to be an economist IS to be pessimistic) in me says that when enough of us are plugging in to fill our "tanks" that the pr...

CO2 makes up a tiny part of our atmosphere b/c it is all dissolved in the ocean. The "runaway" effect is when it gets hot enough to start evaporating the ocean, then more CO2 gets dumped into the atmosphere and it gets hotter...continuing until earth looks like Mars/venus (only Venus is earth where...

The VW hybrid design from twenty or so years ago utilised a 1.3L diesel engine with an electric motor-generator-flywheel that fit in the flywheel housing sandwiched between two clutches. They were getting, iirc, in the 90's for city mpg and in the 70's for highway mpg. They were using the standard G...

Your comments regarding the Prius and other electric hybrids are similar to those that my brother made in extolling the possibilities of hydraulic hybrids. It is also a technology that can be teamed with other systems like electric, fuel cells or compressed air. I agree that hydrogen production can ...

As I mentioned in my previous posts, there is nothing that we can do right now as far as CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions that is going to make any difference on Global Warming. If it is going to happen, the train has already left the station. I am not advocating against change. I am advocatin...

Simon, No need for flames. Whether I concede the reality of Global Warming or not, or whether I accept the notion of its human cause or not, the reality is that whatever we do right now won't have any impact on what will supposedly happen in 30 or 300 years, so why shoot ourselves in the stomach unn...

Hello all, First, I believe that the price difference betweent the U.S. and Europe is due to taxes, not market forces. I have hope that the U.S. won't begin applying large taxes to fuel, but the inaction on the part of Congress regarding fuel prices $2 above what any honest, experienced analyst can ...

START WITH CFD ANALYSIS OF JAM JAR EXPERIMENT?

Forgive me if this has been mentioned before, but might I suggest that any serious CFD analysis of the Reynst pulse pot start with the jam jar experiment and progress from there? It might make for a great Master's thesis, or even a Doctoral dissertation -- or a science fair project.
