Re: Using Salome Meca FEA suite on Linux
If I understood the input file format for Code Aster, and its output, and the triggers needed to run it, I could still code that last semi-joke example in good old non-visual, non object-oriented QBASIC in a few hours. And compile it standalone, too. If you still had one on your computer, it could r...

Re: Hello and questions
When a 6 post guy says others aren't contributing enough, he really knows what he's talking about. Hey, build something and post a log, photos, videos, and congratulate others on their projects. The forum is you, not somebody else. A lot of people are focusing on their economic situation rather than...

Re: Using Salome Meca FEA suite on Linux
Simon, no problem, mate, not your fault! Bottom line, this is elective, for fun (er, uhh, more or less fun) and the software IS free. Kinda hard to justify complaining under those circumstances! No, I was just trying to describe what it feels like, in case someone else wants to try the same thing. An...

Re: DesignCAD 3D Runs on Wine on Linux!
BY the way, DesingCad will read and write .dwg, .dxf, and IGES format drawings, among many others. It should therfore be able to interchange with AutoCAD, CollabCAD, and Salome Meca FEA suite.

Re: DesignCAD 3D Runs on Wine on Linux!
I found the solution on my own computer by running in a terminal: glxgears If it's available on your Linux install, you will see an animation of two gears running, and an indication of your framerate. I had a somewhat jerky animation and the framerate was only about 350 fps. That sounds like a lot, ...

DesignCAD 3D Runs on Wine on Linux!
Man I've been trying to make this happen for several years. I even became a Wine maintainer for this program to try to get it going. I tried everything, native DLLs from Windows installs, contacting others who I found through Google who had worked on the problem, Monitoring system calls in DesignCad...

Re: Mixture ratio measurements
Well in that case, I really like your idea of adjusting the fuel flow with the air speed. I like its simplicity, and the fact that you wouldn't actually need a servo, just a paddle and a linkage to the needle valve. The earliest ASIs in real aircraft were a simple spring loaded pivoting arm with a p...

Re: Mixture ratio measurements
The usual means of throttling is adjusting the fuel flow. With a fixed air inlet, the mixture is self-determining. It has been noted before that maximum thrust favors the rich side of the range, just before flameout. A few people have been able to build pulsejets with conventional carburetors attach...

Re: Using Salome Meca FEA suite on Linux
Well, it has been 3 days since I installed the software, and all of this time has been spent trying to create a simple rectangular 2D mesh (4x8 elements) using Salome in WebPilot's analysis of the 1x2x0.1 cantilevered plate example in the Mode 1/0 thread. Man, this is like pulling teeth! Data entry ...

Using Salome Meca FEA suite on Linux
In another thread I began to learn computer based FEA using LISA in Wine on Linux. The purpose was to try to follow WebPilot's tutorial examples for modeling reed valves. I reached a dead-end with LISA because of the limited types of elements available for thin materials. A model of real world reed ...

Good News, Bad News
Well, the learning was great, but the conclusion is no go for LISA. I successfully learned how to model a finite element in vibration, using LISA, and managed to get reasonable results for WebPilot's example. Extremely glad I did. :D But I finally learned enough to realize that the LISA program won'...

Re: Learning LISA on Linux
Elements come in a variety of types, and it is a little bewildering whan starting out to try to understand what they are, what they mean, and when to use each type. The LISA manual gives a good start with the "quickstart" examples. But you are basically following steps by rote here, without a lot of...

I bought it new 33 years ago. It was used with tables in determining areas of cross sections of boats to find displacement, centers of bouyancy, coefficients, moments, centroids, and stability calculations. Back when Simpson ruled, pre-Homer.

Re: Linux glitches
Does it happen if you boot and immediately open Avidemux without opening Firefox? Also, one source of frequent odd problems in the past has been the Flash player component of Firefox. Any possibility of testing without that? I don't remember if it is removable and re-installable. I don't use Firefox...

Re: Learning LISA on Linux
Comparing LISA's results with those posted by WebPilot In summary, for an a/b ratio of 2:1, Barton's analytical work gives values of * mode 1 (or mode 0/0), 846.1 Hz * mode 2 (or mode 1/0), 3638 Hz * mode 3 (or mode 0/1), 5266 Hz Calculating the frequencies from the LISA program outputs gives: * mod...
