Sounds like a cool idea! But, flame-outs are a big problem to consider. If the flames reach your wing, it's game over. Heat/ flame shields are a must I think.

I'm not an expert when it comes to valved engines but I would try throwing a lit sparkler into the combustion chamber and then trying to start like that.

Do you have a video of your setup and starting attempt? That could be very useful in identifying your problem. Have you considered it might be the engine that's problematic and not your fueling arrangement? some pictures of your engine could be useful. Any leaky welds, bent valves, dents? etc.
