Re: Interested ?

I can't seem to stop thinking up new ideas... my latest (if the theory works) may not even be considered a pulse jet... I'm designing one that doesn't use the vacuum cycle to re-ignite the fuel mixture... :D

Re: Mike's Build Log

Ha! I've been thinking along the same lines too! :D Mainly using a 20oz propane bottle to pressurize a tank of kero for my turbine. It'd be one heck of a lot lighter then a 20lb bottle of propane. Just add a secondary feed line to the top of the tank where all the propane is at and use that to prehe...

Re: Just need a few pointers...

well, I've got to make sure what model exactly my turbo is, but at least I have the correct idea, and how to read this exactly. Ok, so doing that with the flametube is a no-no... well, I still need to widen some of the holes. Thanks for claryifying that! :D I may do some more testing today, and hope...

Re: Just need a few pointers...

ah, ok, that helps a TON! ok, so we want 2.5 for our pressure ratio, at (since we're using this example) 145,000 RPM... so, if every thing is working right, I need to design for 25lbs of pressure. (I believe in over building if possible!) 8) so back to the origninal calculations, 26 sq inches times ...

Re: Just need a few pointers...

hmm... I'll have to check that serial number and see what I actually have.... but, let's just go with the top chart so I can understand this. http://www.turbofast.com.au/img/t3-40.JPG Ok, I see this, but what exactly am I looking at? the pressure ratio is pressure out to ambient (or pressure in?) th...

Re: Just need a few pointers...

you mean the cacluations? or some 3D sim... I think I have some the the calculations, but nothing but that.

But yeah, I'll get the gauges on before the next test. I've got a bit of re-fitting to do anyways. Now that I know the thing WILL work, it's time to get it working right. :D

Re: Been a while - new project, T04 Gas Turbine.

the thing I was curious about, was, wouldn't the flash of the strobe have a bit of a delay? :? hmm... but then again, you're probably not spinning it that fast either, so that would eliminate that problem... very interesting! I might have to experiment and try to set up a rig like that for myself. T...

Re: Just need a few pointers...

Currently, the only instrumentation is an oil pressure gauge. I do have a pyrometer for the TOT and a pressure gauge for P2's but haven't rigged them up yet. (I have to get a jet pipe on before the pyrometer is used, but I could start installing the p2 Gauge any time now...) I know that's generally ...

Re: my valveless jet kart

that's some thin stuff! (bet it was REALLY easy to form!) Yeah, for something that size, you'll want to use a bit thicker metal. Stainless tends to hold up a bit better though. Do make sure to clean it spotless before you run it though! Any fingerprints and such will leave some ugly marks! :) Just o...

Re: Just need a few pointers...

ok, here's the deal. I removed the flame tube and decided "heck with modifying the nozzle" mainly because it's fairly well stuck in place, and, I have no idea how I'll get it back in once I get it out. Definitely a spot of poor engineering... I'll figure out something I guess. So I remo...

Re: Okay, I think I've lost it

I do think edmund optics still sells the plate glass, if not it's their discount "scratch and dent" anchor optics that sells it...

yup: http://www.anchoroptics.com/catalog/product.cfm?id=149

6" plate glass tool, $20.00

that's fairly cheap!

Re: Okay, I think I've lost it

just out of curiosity, are all those pictures full size, or have they been shrunken?

Very very cool though! I have so got to make a pyrex pulse jet.... and get my hands on a high speed camera. :D

Re: my valveless jet kart

just out of curiosity, what happened to the engine? did you get rid of it, or did it break? (your youtube discription said it folded?) mild steel WILL take the heat, you may have chosen something too thin. :) you could try welding some bands around the hot spots to keep it a bit more sturdy. Also, I...

ah, ok, that makes a bit more sense now. :) I'm still wondering where I'm going to get some sheet metal to try mine, we'll have to see if either one works better! :D

Re: Just need a few pointers...

well, let's go ahead and calculate the pressure on the bolts. the can of the combustor is 5.8 inches, that's 26 sq inches. At 15lb pressure (that's normal boost right?) there's 396 lbs of pressure on it. HOWEVER, there's actually minimal pressure on the flametube itself, it's "submersed" all around ...
