In the latest Discover (Aug., 2003) magazine, there's an article on the feasibility of interstellar travel. (Most of the concepts discussed in this thread are covered. I checked their website and the article is not available online yet.) For their space ram, they describe a collector that is tens of thousands of miles in diameter. It's not a physical collector, it's a magnetic one.
