Air does not bother you when you walk or run, right? But, stick your head out of the car window at 100 mph.

The concentration of ions may be insignificant when you travel at low velocity. So, maybe you have to spend a tank of some gas getting up to speed. Once you have achieved a significant fraction of the speed of light, however, the amount of ions likely to enter your funnel will be far from small.
