Bruno, I think that solar power or a nuclear reactor could power the device:

^Negatively charged grid

The negatively charged grid could pull in the ions. The positively charged grid could accelerate the ions. If electromagnets were used you could make the magnets have a certain powered magnetic field so they could only exert enough power to pull in certain ions.
