I don't think gases would even notice it was not round, if it were 8-sided.
Some people who make their own wooden spars for boats leave them 8-sided, rather than proceed to round them fully. there is no record that I know of, of such spars being weaker in any direction of stress than round spars.
Maybe pipes are that way too. Once they are 8-sided or so, might as well be round as far as gas is concerned.
